Why is it that driver's license pictures are notoriously bad? I mean it shouldn't be any different than having any other picture taken. You stand in front of a camera and they click the picture. And yet somehow they're always SO bad.
I'm generally okay with most pictures people take of me and I can take some selfies that I'm quite pleased with, but in my driver's license picture I look like a constipated ostrich.
What gives?
Extra question: Is it also this way in countries other than the US?
Passport, too. It's not like they take a dozen pics and use the best one. You pretty much get one or two shots at it. There must be lots of photos we've seen of ourselves that we've thrown away because they weren't flattering. But you can't throw away the ID one.
Yes that's part of the problem. It's a picture that follows you around for years. I would think the main goal would be to take a picture that if someone needed to look at it to identify you, it would clearly look like you. I do not look like an ostrich, especially a constipated one, so they did not accomplish this goal.
I've started making an appointment to get my license renewed which has resulted in me getting in and out quickly. I agree that being able to do so feels like an accomplishment in and of itself.
In my mind, the purpose of a picture on a driver's license is for identification purposes. The main times that somebody would be looking at the picture is if a police officer pulls you over, or for an event requiring a picture ID like taking college entrance exams. The DMV guy should tell people to stare at the camera and pose like a deer in headlights because that's how anybody's going to look in any of those scenarios.
Just for the sake of conversation - don't take it badly...
Its not like a wedding pic, or a yearbook pic. It's actually very rare you even have to pull it out (I gather, since we are from the same generation, you also drive very safely - nowadays that is, LOL).
And even if you do, it would most likely be a cop you'll never see again.
It seems to me you're letting something very insignificant rent up too much space in your head - respectfully stated.
Sometimes I start threads that are more serious and conversational and sometimes I'm just being silly. Today is a silly day. π I actually haven't thought about the driver's license picture much at all since the day it was taken.
Sounds like it's an international problem. When you say the other three went in the bin, does that mean they took four shots and you got to pick one of them?
Wow! That's interesting. I would have thought it would be across the board for the whole US. I guess the individual states get to determine if we're plagued by a picture that looks like an ostrich (in my case) or not.
I guess that's at least nice that they ask. Here in the US, or at least the part where I live, you get one shot and then they (figuratively) kick you out the door. π
