Driver's license pictures

Why is it that driver's license pictures are notoriously bad? I mean it shouldn't be any different than having any other picture taken. You stand in front of a camera and they click the picture. And yet somehow they're always SO bad.

I'm generally okay with most pictures people take of me and I can take some selfies that I'm quite pleased with, but in my driver's license picture I look like a constipated ostrich.

What gives?

Extra question: Is it also this way in countries other than the US?

reply

Passport, too. It's not like they take a dozen pics and use the best one. You pretty much get one or two shots at it. There must be lots of photos we've seen of ourselves that we've thrown away because they weren't flattering. But you can't throw away the ID one.

reply

Yes that's part of the problem. It's a picture that follows you around for years. I would think the main goal would be to take a picture that if someone needed to look at it to identify you, it would clearly look like you. I do not look like an ostrich, especially a constipated one, so they did not accomplish this goal.

This is what one celebrates at the DMV. I don't know if it is my record (which is spotless) or good luck - but I'm always in and out.

It never fails, I walk in and see people arguing, exasperated, frustrated. I walk in, take the pic, get the license, walk out - no problems at all.

I like that part of it, but , indeed like the OP, I hate my pic.

Well, you just chuck it in your wallet and try to forget about it.

reply

I've started making an appointment to get my license renewed which has resulted in me getting in and out quickly. I agree that being able to do so feels like an accomplishment in and of itself.

In my mind, the purpose of a picture on a driver's license is for identification purposes. The main times that somebody would be looking at the picture is if a police officer pulls you over, or for an event requiring a picture ID like taking college entrance exams. The DMV guy should tell people to stare at the camera and pose like a deer in headlights because that's how anybody's going to look in any of those scenarios.

reply

Yeah, exactly on your paragraph. You walk out feeling like "Wow, I made out!"

I didn't know you could make appointments. Where I live its a once every four year deal. I don't think we can make appointments here.

ANyway, yeah, well, I smiled for my pic - it still looks stupid, LOL. But, what can you do???

Well actually , one answered this previously, chuck it in the wallet and forget about it.

reply

Yes mine is in my wallet too but clearly I haven't forgotten about it. πŸ˜‚

I'm just going to have to drive like a good little girl cuz I don't plan for that picture to see the light of day.

reply

Ok, ahhaahah

Just for the sake of conversation - don't take it badly...

Its not like a wedding pic, or a yearbook pic. It's actually very rare you even have to pull it out (I gather, since we are from the same generation, you also drive very safely - nowadays that is, LOL).

And even if you do, it would most likely be a cop you'll never see again.

It seems to me you're letting something very insignificant rent up too much space in your head - respectfully stated.

reply

No worries. I know we're friends. πŸ™‚

Sometimes I start threads that are more serious and conversational and sometimes I'm just being silly. Today is a silly day. 😁 I actually haven't thought about the driver's license picture much at all since the day it was taken.

reply

Outstanding!

Ok, good to hear it.

Rock on and have fun! So they say.....

One life, I'm gonna LIVE IT UP!

Actually, it isn't me that originally said this......

reply

Oh God yes! I had to have an ID picture taken a few weeks ago and it's awful. The other 3 went straight in the bin.
Absolutely hate those things.

reply

Sounds like it's an international problem. When you say the other three went in the bin, does that mean they took four shots and you got to pick one of them?

reply

No it was just 4 of the same one I think. They all looked as equally bad at least πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

reply

My state(Vermont) didn't even require a driver's license with a photo until just a few years ago!

reply

Wow! That's interesting. I would have thought it would be across the board for the whole US. I guess the individual states get to determine if we're plagued by a picture that looks like an ostrich (in my case) or not.

reply

My pictures were fine until my 30s. Now they are just awful. I don't even bother to get them to retake them anymore when they ask if I'm okay with it.

reply

I guess that's at least nice that they ask. Here in the US, or at least the part where I live, you get one shot and then they (figuratively) kick you out the door. πŸ˜‚

reply

You're likely in a bad mood from having to deal with DMV workers. Think Patty and Selma from The Simpsons.

reply

That is frequently the case, but this last time I actually got a rather jovial fella. His cordialness actually pleasantly took me by surprise.

reply

I never need this "license" for horse 🐎

reply

That's too bad! I would think you'd look very nice in a picture, what with your leather and animal pelt clothing and pointed helmet with antlers.
