Everything is so darn fancy

I remember going to the grocery store to get a sub sandwich as teen. Turkey, ham, lettus tomato, onion, cucumber and Swiss cheese on white bread. Add mustard and your golden.

Now everything is focaccia, swirl rye with cranberry, artisan bread with sun dried tomatoes picked off the pavement and AVOCADO 🤮 on everything (this is on you Millennials, your hipster B.S. is why these mushy abominations are everywhere).

ham and cheese on white? Nope
Egg salad? Sure if you want AVOCADO shoved in there.

You can't even get a ham and cheese sandwich without some jackassery trying to make it fancy.

I know white bread is the devil right now, but the sheer amount of inserts and flourishes doesn't make a sandwich healthier. If anything, it actually increases the bad calorie intake. It's so dumb. This is up there with people thinking subway is healthy.

It's just like people calling their entrance hallways "foyers" and attached baths "en suites." So pretentious and in the case of foyer - it really refers to an entrance in a public building, not a private home.

reply

Foyer makes me think of hotel lobbys.

reply

It's supposed to be large. If it's not, it's an entryway or mudroom.

reply

Sorry, what I meant was, in England we call hotel lobbys ‘foyers’.

Some of this could be regional. In the part of the southern US where I live, people use the word foyer all the time interchangeably with entrance hall for the entry area of houses but I've never thought of it as being particularly fancy.

Also around here it's pronounced foy-ur.
