and we got to talking about the best monster movies. We agree that list is kind of the bunk. It's weird not include vampires or zombies, and a lot of parody films and strange stuff made the list. I never thought of Predator as a monster movie, though it does have a monster in it. We're trying to come up with our own. I tried to keep mine broad, like the original list, though I'm including all types of monsters. Here's my work in progress, ranked from 1 to 50:

1 Dracula (1931)
2 The Blob (1958)
3 Bride of Frankenstein
4 Phantom of the Opera (1925)
5 The Thing
6 Frankenstein (1931)
7 The Birds
8 The Shining
9 Evil Dead 2
10 Jason and the Argonauts
11 Godzilla (1954)
12 Rosemary’s Baby
13 The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
14 Mark of the Vampire
15 The Exorcist
16 Let Me In
17 The Blair Witch Project
18 The Fly (1986)
19 It Follows
20 Predator
21 Psycho
22 The Thing from Another World
23 The Terminator
24 Drag Me to Hell
25 Invaders From Mars (1953)
26 King Kong (1933)
27 Midsommar
28 Black Sunday
29 Nosferatu (1922)
30 Night of the Living Dead
31 Alien
32 The Sixth Sense
33 The Others
34 Night of the Demon
35 The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms
36 Dead of Night
37 Re-Animator
38 Gremlins
39 Mothra
40 Them!
41 War of the Gargantuas
42 Cat People (1942)
43 Cloverfield
44 Friday the 13th
45 Suspiria
46 Return of the Living Dead
47 Halloween

49 The Mummy (1932)
50 A Nightmare on Elm Street

Too many. Try asking about the top 10.

The article was about 50, ranked, so I ranked 50. You're free to share 10, or any number, or even just praise or ridicule my choices.

reply

Just out of curiosity, who or what in The Shining is the monster in your opinion?

reply

I think the hotel itself is the monster. It's possessed by something evil, much like the car is in Christine.

reply

That's what I would think as well, but there are different ways to interpret it. 👍🏼

reply

I've never really given it too much thought, or talked to anyone else about it. What are some of the other interpretations you've heard?

reply

I don't think "Carrie", "The Sixth Sense", "Midsommar" or "The Blair Witch Project" could be classified as monster movies.

reply

I agree it's a gray area, but I kept my choices pretty broad, because of the way the linked article approached it, so I included films where the monster is a supernatural force, ghost, or witch, or even just an evil person. If Friday the 13th counts as a monster movie, I think so too does Midsommar.

I'd bump alien to number 1.

reply

I'd bump your Alien to number two, under The Thing

reply

You guys really like Alien!
