The 7 Up candy bar

It was discontinued in 1979, but I don't recall seeing it in Chicago as a kid. However, it did look yummy! It is too bad it was taken off the market.

I remember those!

eta: A similar candy bar was/is the Sky Bar...

I'm glad you posted the link to it. Before I saw the picture I thought it might taste like the 7Up soft drink. Blech!

The picture actually looks delicious.

reply

Me too and I agree, it does look tasty.

reply

Have you tried cola gummies? They are pretty tasty.

reply

I do love candy and I'm old enough to remember something from the 1970s, but I don't recall those at all (NYC).

reply

Maybe it was regional. I would love to come across the glass like lollipops I recall as a kid in the 70's. They were so pretty. I might check out some old timey themed candy stores.

reply

I grew up just outside the city in CT and while we definitely had them, they weren't quite as ubiquitous as, say, a Hershey Bar...i.e. not necessarily available in all stores!

This reminds me of the history of the 3 Musketeers candy bar. When it was introduced in 1932 it was comprised of three pieces with three different flavors: chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. This is what gave the bar its name. Because of rising costs and sugar rationing during WWII, the strawberry and vanilla pieces were dropped; chocolate was retained because it was the most popular.

Huh, learn something new everyday!

reply

It's too bad, Mars did not make a retro 3 flavored Three Musketeers to mark the anniversary in 2022, despite the pandemic.

reply

I was hoping for the same. Although I'm sure it would not have been as good as the original now that artificial flavors and high-fructose corn syrup have become the norm. And the bar would have been a lot smaller than the original, guaranteed.

Have you tried the new flavors of Hershey bars and Kit Kats currently on the market? I like the strawberry, mocha, and mint flavored Hershey's. The chocolate donut flavored Kit Kat is OK as well. I am however not cool paying $2 for a candy bar, but oh well.

reply

The birthday cake Kit Kat is another good, relatively recent flavor.

reply

That one sounds good, too.

reply

I haven't tried these yet because I have to watch what I eat. The holidays are about the only time I will have candy.
Those sound good, especially the mint Hershey's one. I will put these on my shopping list in about another month. Thanks for the suggestions.

reply

Mars might bring them back for the 95th anniversary. Hostess brought back banana flavored Twinkees.

I don't remember it. I remember some things from 1979, but not a lot, since I was only 4 years old.

I never paid much attention to candy bars anyway; I always though they, along with sweets in general, were highly overrated. That is, except for soda. Some flops I remember include Like Cola and New Coke when I was a kid, and Crystal Pepsi when I was in my late teens.

reply

I was 12, and have no recollection as well. But I recall all the colas you mentioned they were OK. I miss orange- vanilla Coke. It was really good!

Although, it is rare, there are kids who do not have a sweet tooth.

Sorry Popcorngal, I meant to reply to Maxim above. He's such a blowhard.

reply

Oh I know it was not directed at me personally, just making a general comment. But thanks anway.

reply

Duh, so you never heard of it and you don't like candy bars. Thrilling.

reply

Not directly related, but have you guys seen the folks at YouTube drinking 30 year old 7up crystal?

reply

I arrived in Chicago in 1987 and I never heard of it. Although 7-UP was the first soft drink I tried on my first day in the U.S.
