Watermelon rind pickle🍉🥒

Never even heard of it until I recently saw it mentioned in a episode of The Love Boat. Found a simple recipe and made some myself. Very good use for leftovers.👍

There used to be a verrry fancy restaurant in my hometown that would serve a relish tray before dinner and it included watermelon rind pickles. I remember them being good and unique.

reply

Apparently it's a Southern thing. I like Southern cuisine, it's interesting.

reply

Yes it probably is a Southern thing. I think I've seen them on the menu at other restaurants but that's the only restaurant where I actually ate one.

Tired of crappy seedless melons here in the Northeast U.S., I started researching growing my own (zone 5). Not a lot of watermelons can finish in the relatively short season, but I discovered an interesting melon long believed to be extinct (there are like a thousand known variants still around).

It's called the Bradford, and it supposedly makes superior brandy, molasses, and rind pickles.

Watermelons are very persnickety fruits prone to rot and pest attack if the gardener is not careful. I lived in zone 6 most of my life and had only middling results. Pumpkins were much easier.

I’m living in zone 5 now and have pretty much given up on both in my gardens☹️

I've grown several varieties successfully in the last few years (the Ledmon is a real sweet melon), but make sure the garden gets a LOT of sun - in the Northeast there are usually a lot of trees that block the sun at parts of the day.

The bigger question is: why in the hell were you watching The Love Boat?

reply

I heard it’s exciting and new.
Come aboard, we’re expecting yooouuuu!

A 3 hour tour!

Damn, wrong show.

reply

Holy shit, I just saw Gilligan's Island was trending at the top.

reply

Do you see what you did?!?
I should hit you over the head with my Captain’s hat!

reply

Because Captain Stubing has sexy legs.

reply

Those Dutch men must be a bunch of 1/10s if that's what you have to resort to.

reply

Send me a picture of your legs then.🦵🦵

Never heard of it before this thread, sounds interesting though I'd like to try some watermelon rind pickle

If you're making recipes from TV shows how about trying to make the Moroccan Pasta from Peep Show next?

The "improved" version doesn't look all that great either.🫤

Pasta and beans is actually an authentic Italian dish, by the way.
