The best part of the self sacrifice in this film is it's actually true. These events happened in real life.
The producers of the film were so determined they stay true to the story that, for instance in one scene, an interrogation scene, they used the actual transcripts of the interrogation. So when you watch the scene - you're hearing what the two people involved actually said, word for word.
It's the true story of an Anti-Nazi resistance group called The White Rose.
If you watch the film, you'll see how much they sacrificed.
It's a great movie, so very well acted.
