Shakira.

What are our opinions on this 90s, 00s and 2010s etc Colombian female singer, most known for such 2001/2002 singles as "Whenever, Wherever", "Underneath Your Clothes" and others, including the 2001 album "Laundry Service" but also, has anyone heard her 90s albums like 1995's "Pies descalzos", 1998's "Dónde están los ladrones?" if you have heard them, which seem to have a GOOD reputation even if her post 2002 albums are rated as generally average pop?

Also, compared to say popular mainstream US pop singers ala Britney Spears, is Shakira generally above average?

I remember also how 20 or so years ago back in the golden days of IMDb one admittedly clever female user called Gina something spoke NEGATIVELY of Shakira and "likened" her to Britney Spears, even finding it SHALLOW that people find her and Britney attractive let alone appreciate either's music, and one guy who is a fan defended Shakira stating stuff like "you are being ignorant and empty, Shakira is a talented singer, way above Britney and that especially her earlier work she did under her mother tongue Spanish language has a lot to offer so speak before you think etc" and I wonder - did Gina actually listen to any of Shakira's PRIOR work before "Laundry Service" era, although I think that male user ALSO liked "Laundry Service" and popular songs from IT, then again, Gina also I remember disliked ABBA and thought The Corrs (not a huge fan of them but I like some of their songs) was the most boring band ever so maybe she has too, who knows.

But anyways. Shakira, any thoughts, cheers. :)

reply

I find it hard to believe that her hips always tell the truth.

reply

Really, they do? How do you know this parkerbot, also, are you a fan or even appreciator of some if not most of her music? Do you own any of her albums?

P.S. Sorry for this controversial ASPECT but, in her video for "Whenever, Wherever", what is the significance of her dancing semi clad but also covering some parts of her body with mountain dirt?

reply

I do not own any of her albums.

I was led to believe by her and the mainstream media that her hips never lie.

However upon closer study, they do not appear to lie:

reply

Hahaha, lol, I read it as first as her LIPS never lie, not "hips", lol :)

But do maybe one day check out some of her stuff including those two 90s albums on YouTube, I am sure you've heard some of her singles though in the last 20 or so years.

reply

"Whenever, wherever, we'll have to be together, I'll be there and you'll be near and that's the deal my dear." :) (Also, I think "Whenever, Wherever" was recently COVERED by someone but I am not sure who or even if that is the case.)

reply

I think a lot of people agree with Shakira’s hip in that pic😆

reply

She's a criminal!

reply

Really? In what way????

P.S. They recently arrested a Russian female singer who I believe is now in her early 70s Larisa Dolina, but I have no idea yet as to why - wouldn't be surprised if its something to do with the Ukraine and Russian armed conflict but can't tell yet.

reply

But even if its true, we can still discuss and if need be appreciate her music, right?

reply

"She's a criminal!"
Did that, even if 100% true, in any way stop say people appreciating her music who are fans or her close friends and relatives from thinking positive of her overall?

reply

Also, yeah, but, what is your opinion on her music, thanks.

reply

Whenever, Wherever is okayish, but the rest is not really my kind of music. Don't like her voice.

reply

Sorry, airheaded pop. Not a fan. Not that I've ever heard anything by her. 🤣

reply

No worries but I am sure you are probably familiar with her singles at least if not her pre 2001 "Laundry Service"-era material, which is surprisingly rated well compared to her post 2002 efforts.

reply

P.S. And what do we think about that internet argument from 20 years ago, was either Gina or that male user fan of Shakira in the right? (Also, Gina conflated finding Britney Spears and Shakira attractive with being fans of their music but also thought both activities were shallow etc.)

reply

She was actually inspired by Depeche Mode and her childhood favourite song by them was the 1990's super hit single "Enjoy the Silence", off the "Violator" (1990) album.

And interestingly also, she was also inspired by the Italian singer Eros Ramazzotti, but her overall musical reputation seems to be better than that of him.

reply

I'm clubbing right now. I'll check her out later and answer.

reply

She has a couple of interesting songs, in Spanish as well as in English.
