OMG they made the Opening Ceremony worse than the Oscars

I lasted about 1/2 hour. I caught Lady Gaga which wasn't bad. But I just turned the damn thing off. I'll watch a highlight reel.

reply

It was very daring and boundary pushing

reply

It was a fucking disgrace and further proof of the downward spiral America is facing if the Left have their way in the 2024 Election. Sorry to toss Politics into this, but feel it's almost impossible not to and this thread would probably be better suited in the Politics Forum

I did see this (which is what another thread is about) https://nypost.com/2024/07/26/sports/drag-performers-seemingly-emulate-last-supper-at-olympic-opening-ceremony/

But I wasn't referring to anything like that. At first, the Parade of Athletes in boats seemed like a cool idea, but really it was a bore. I didn't even make it to the 'C' countries.

I will check out some highlights, I read that Celine Dion was good, and a few other things.

reply

I'm an old metal head and I don't care about her style of music but Celine Dion has a strong and beautiful voice and she was flawless with her performance. I respect her bravery.

reply

I watched the whole thing, except I missed the drag queens. I thought it was truly terrible until the very end and that was spectacular.

reply

I admire your endurance.

reply

Didn't watch it and could care less.

Only interested in the strikes and riots and to see if that phony horse sport will finally get the no elephants and the circus treatment that it deserves.

reply

It's 'couldn't care less'.

reply

You missed the memo, society's collapsing and only a small handful of people care about proper grammar any more.

reply

it's not grammar, it's a completely wrong use of the word, in fact it's using the OPPOSITE word of what the correct expression actually means. Just another stupid American bastardisation of an English phrase.

reply

You forgot to capitalize the i at the start of your sentence.

This article suggests that "could care less" is not a horrible faux pas.

While I consider "couldn't" the more correct form, there is something I like about "could." You see, I could care less, I am able to care less, but the matter is so inconsequential to me that it isn't worth the effort, the bother.

reply

I like that it bothers people.

The world is falling apart and people cling to the little things. I like that.

reply

Their only real argument is that that either is acceptable because it’s such a common mistake, that doesn’t mean it’s not incorrect. If the context is to express that you don’t care, then one is correct, and one isn’t.

reply

I could care less - it's possible I could care a little less.

I could not care less - it's impossible for me to care less.

I like to keep my caring options open.

reply

The first one implies that you do care, even if it’s a tiny bit. Which is the opposite of what you are trying to express when you say I couldn’t care less.

reply

Don't you tell me what I care about, you're not my mother.

reply

I lasted 1 hour before bailing.

I thought the hosts were horrible. They should be knowledgeable and able to tell us about the different nation's athletes/teams as well as the events going on. Instead they're interviewing actors who were promoting and playing endless ads. Kelly Clarkson? Blech!

reply

Yes, I didn't care for the hosts either.

reply

A bad presentation can ruin something that otherwise would be enjoyable. The French themselves are very happy with the Opening so I'm convinced the main problem is with NBCs production. It looked very visual, daring, filled with France's culture and history on the French news. NBC repeatedly cut-away from the actual Opening too much. I'm hoping a French channel will upload the entire ceremony on youtube so I can see what they watched.

reply

I had zero interest in any part of it, but I did watch Celine Dion's performance of "Hymn to Love" on YouTube and was it ever spectacular, especially in light of her health issues and not having performed publicly in four years. The only thing better than that was watching her pianist beaming at her while she was singing and even singing along with her at times. He was completely in the moment and looked so proud.

That closed the show, so I bet a lot of people didn't stick around for it. https://youtu.be/smKqMiGXxl4

Still a remarkable voice.
Thanks for posting.

They must have promoted someone from the Special Olympics committee.
