That always struck me at the end of the film. He is standing there as an old man and there doesn’t seem to be anything remarkable about him. Capt Miller told him to “earn this”.
And sure he may have gotten married, had some kids, led an upstanding and moral life.
But did he do anything extraordinary to warrant so many men dying for him?
I also thought it was dumb that he insisted on staying to fight the final battle when the rescue team arrived.
If I were Capt Miller I would have knocked him out and taken him back by force. How many extra men died during that battle and what if Ryan himself was killed?
