What did you watch this week G? (06/09-06/15)

Big weekend! Today we celebrated Father’s Day, my mom’s birthday and my brother’s birthday all wrapped up in one. We ate good, had fun playing games and shared laughs but tomorrow is Monday.
I’m like Garfield. I hate Mondays.

My week:

Skyscraper (2018 DVD): I could pretty much copy and paste my review for San Andreas but it wasn’t even that good. I didn’t care for most of what happened in the first half but the second half was entertaining enough with plenty of action and thrills. My rating: 5/10

The Banshees of Inisherin (2022 Disney+): There’s a few prerequisites in order to appreciate this movie; you have to be in on the joke right off the start as it is one long, stretched out, absurd and peculiar joke. You also have to let yourself be absorbed and immersed into the film in order to live the experience to the fullest. In other words, no distractions. Believe it or not, as busy and noisy as my house is, I was able to have such a moment on a quiet evening. This movie didn’t make me laugh a lot but it was hilarious. If that makes sense. There’s no true plot yet the story focusing on the 2 men’s relationship was endearing. The scale of the dialogue is so small that it becomes larger than life. Just like the wonderful settings of Ireland; the natural and grandiose decor versus the trivial situations occurring make things even more sensational. I know, it’s weird but it’s true. A minuscule capsule in space and time, this film is magnificent and should be seen by all. The music was a voyage and the sights were transporting. Even the animals were part of the travel; the dog, the miniature donkey, the horse… The horse literally made me laugh at some point. One thing that is NOT a prerequisite is liking the actors. For feck sake, like, I don’t really care about any of the cast member yet I loved them all here. Colin’s facial expressions were as good as they’ve ever been. My rating: 8.5/10

Palm Springs (2020 Prime): For the first minutes I was like, oh boy, not sure I’ll like this. Then my wife ditched on it like 15 minutes in because she “had better things to do”. I wasn’t too sure I’d finish it at that point but it turns out that I did. When the story gets in gear and finds its rhythm it becomes rich with fun and entertaining moments, situations and life concepts. The characters are not great but the actors did a good enough job bringing them to life. My rating: 7/10

Fallout (2024 Prime): I watched the final episode on Sunday evening. Overall, it was edgy, funny, quirky, colourful, action packed, violent and the story was great. My rating: 9/10

American horror stories S1 E5: Ba'al: Very well put together, has a nice build up to a double twist ending and one very violent scene but the problem with the short length is that 1 of the 2 twists was obvious from a mile away and the second one was not much more surprising. 6.5/10
E6: Feral: That was really fucking good. Probably my favourite in this season. It was just really fucking good. 8/10

House on haunted hill (Friday night special): I don’t see what’s the big deal on this one. It’s not particularly clever, good or anything. It’s was just below average I would say. Tales from the crypt this ain’t. My rating: 5/10

Gringo (Friday late night): Some good ideas are wasted on a messy script, some good actors are wasted on shitty roles, some dark humour potential wasted on crappy jokes (I didn’t laugh once). This movie was a disappointing FLOP. The 2 or 3 car crashes were very cool and I appreciated the happy ending but I will forget all about it by Friday next week I’m sure. Keanu this ain’t. My rating: 4.5/10

Q: the winged serpent (Saturday night special): This was way better than it had any right to be. Truth is, it was like a breath of fresh air. The feel good vibe of this bloody monster madness of a film won me over quickly. Just like a big circus tent dropped in the sky by helicopters to catch the dragon that, in his case, is… us! The audience! Ta da!! Now you get it. Made by movie lovers, for movie lovers and perfect for the MCMC. And let me tell you what; I believed MORE in the winged serpent than I did the love affaire between Edgerton and Newton in Gringo. My rating: 7.5/10

Tenebrae(Saturday late night special): I kind of liked the whole book writer/cop investigation that was going on. The soundtrack was so upbeat, loud and amazing. The actresses were… well… very good. Not my genre of film but I was able to appreciate. The entire night scene with the Doberman attacking the girl was very good and memorable. Then the killer finished it if proper, with an axe. As for the killer reveal, as VinceD said, it was not much of a surprise but I have to admit that the movie had me change my suspicions from him at least two times during the second half. My rating: 6.5/10

Movie Club Review: I loved how you got cranked up for Gringo! « Harry, stop being a pussy! »

It was perfect. 👍

For House on haunted hill I was doing the math in my head same time as you! Hehe (1959+41=2000 we are in 2024 so 41 + 24 = it’s been a reference for horror tropes for at least 60 years)

Lol. I've been ranting more lately. It's cathartic. Lol

In Time (2011): 8/10. It was an engaging flick with an interesting theme (what if people stopped aging at 25, had one year to live after that, and they could get extra time to live but it was like a currency?) I enjoyed the film but I did leave with wanting a little more...exploration of the theme? (Watched on YouTube.)

I still remember when my cousin told me to watch this movie because it was so good. I guess my expectations were too high because I didn’t care about it very much. I mean it was just OK. 6/10

X-Men ‘97 (2024) - I binge watched it and it was great. Dozens of Easter Eggs for nerds like me - I had a blast watching it 7.75/10.

Let’s go bro!! Come back next week, door’s always open here.

Especially for the likes of you.

I also hate Mondays and I am wearing a Garfield shirt.

The Banshees of Inisherin 9/10
Palm Springs 7/10
House on Haunted Hill 7/10
Q: the winged serpent 7/10
Tenebrae 7/10

I watched:

Shake, Rattle and Rock! 1956 6/10 If you don't like this movie, you are an old square! All us young hip cats dig it. There is some groovy music here that we get down to that you old timers wouldn't understand. Sure, the story isn't all that swell, but this is still pretty neato.

The Watchers 2024 7/10 I thought this was a mostly effective and engaging atmospheric thriller/horror. Performances were good and I found the story interesting.

Wild in the Country 1961 6/10 I didn't find the story all that interesting, but the acting was pretty good.

A Song Is Born 1948 6/10 This was alright.

Lisa Frankenstein 2024 7/10 I liked this. I enjoyed Kathryn Newton's performance and I loved the look and style of the film. Not everything works and it could have been funnier, but I had a good time with it.

Palmy Days 1931 6/10 This was reasonably amusing, lots of silly shenanigans.

Whoopee! 1930 5/10 This wasn't as fun or entertaining as it should have been.

The Goldwyn Follies 1938 6/10 The story is fairly thin and is really just a way to connect musical and comedy bits. Some of them are amusing, some of them are not. I liked the dummy and the here pussy song with the cats. The costumes and cinematography were good too. A mixed bag, but might be worth a look if you like dummies and songs about pussy (cats).

From the Family of Reptiles 1974 7/10 I thought this was well acted and interesting.

Hollywood Barn Dance 1947 5/10 Not much of a story and not very interesting, but some nice singing.

Kid Millions 1934 6/10 This wasn't as entertaining as I would have hoped, but I enjoyed a couple of the songs.

Robin Hood 1973 7/10 Although not as good as some of the other classic Disney films, this one has some cute moments, charming characters, and lovely animation.

Barney’s Great Adventure 1998 7/10 Barney is a fun character and I thought this movie had some charm to it. The acting works for what it is and the story is sufficiently silly to keep viewers engaged.

Frankie and Johnny 1966 7/10 I liked the costumes, cinematography, and the music.

Little Shop of Horrors 1986 8/10 This was fun. Rick Moranis is wonderful here and I liked the supporting performances. I enjoyed the songs and the story.

The Road to Hong Kong 1962 6/10 A few amusing moments, but this should have been funnier and more entertaining.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 1953 8/10 Wonderful performances, witty dialogue and fun songs are the highlights of this entertaining musical.

Be Yourself! 1930 5/10 This was boring, for the most part. Acting was alright, singing was fine.

Wish 2023 8/10 I enjoyed this. I liked the animation, the characters, and the songs.

Inside Out 2 2024 9/10 This is the best film of the year (so far). The animation is fantastic and the performances are wonderful. The screenplay is excellent. Inside Out 2 is a beautiful, intelligent, heartfelt film. It's not quite as terrific as the first one, but this is a joyful and hopeful film that resonates with viewers, young and old.

Peter Pan 1953 7/10 Although not as good as some of the other Disney classics, this is still pretty fun and entertaining. I liked the characters.

Babes in Toyland 1961 7/10 I liked the costumes and cinematography. The story didn't completely work for me, but I liked some of the singing.

The Great Muppet Caper 1981 8/10 This was fun. I love the characters.

Q 1982 7/10 I enjoyed this more on rewatch. It's pretty fun.

Tenebre 1982 7/10 This is stylish and sexy with good kills and a great score. It's entertaining for the most part, although not everything storywise works for me.

YOU wearing a Garfield shirt makes MY day better.

Plus we both watched a movie with the word Palm innit. How crazy is that?

The Watchers and Lisa Frankenstein are both on my list. I almost picked LF tonight but picked Sisu instead.

Mayor Of Kingstown is excellent, I’m about midway through S2👍
Jeremy Renner can absolutely carry a show! He’s terrific and understated, which is exactly what you’d want from a political ‘fixer’ in a really violent town.

Rewatched The Revenant starring Leo DiCaprio. A possibly apocryphal story that’s been shared multiple times, it tells the story of one Hugh Glass who goes West with an ill-fated fur trapping expedition and winds up fighting Indians and an enormous Brown Bear to the death.
I truly believe that DiCaprio is one of our elite current movie stars. I’d watch the guy buy groceries!

The First 48: Missing Persons. It’s on A&E and they don’t always solve the case but it’s gritty and very sad. There are a few seasons.

I did have sort of a man crush on Jeremy Renner a while back. I was trying to watch everything he did. Might have to see that show someday.

The revenant: 9/10

The Shallows 2016 6.5/10 I thought I'd get bored with just Blake Lively trying to survive for an hour, but this was actually pretty good.

Same! 6.5/10

Lawman: Bass Reeves (2024) - 8 out of 10, enjoyable limited series from start to finish. You can find it at Walmart or Paramount+.

Return to the Planet of the Apes (1975) - 8 out of 10, surprisingly good cartoon that had a single story arc that carried forward to a pleasant ending. The music was great and the art style, while minimal, was used quite nicely. You can watch it on YouTube.

reply

I bought the original planet of the apes at a garage sale this summer. I’ve seen all the remix, but none of the original that they were never appealing to me. Hopefully, I’ll be surprised.

reply

They're all quite good in my humble opinion, including the live action TV show.

reply

I may be too quick to judge as I only seen the trailers but aren’t you guys put off by the fake looking masks?

reply

They looked great.

Watch it on a TV that isn't the size of a billboard ( :
