What did you watch this week G? (06/09-06/15)
Big weekend! Today we celebrated Father’s Day, my mom’s birthday and my brother’s birthday all wrapped up in one. We ate good, had fun playing games and shared laughs but tomorrow is Monday.
I’m like Garfield. I hate Mondays.
My week:
Skyscraper (2018 DVD): I could pretty much copy and paste my review for San Andreas but it wasn’t even that good. I didn’t care for most of what happened in the first half but the second half was entertaining enough with plenty of action and thrills. My rating: 5/10
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022 Disney+): There’s a few prerequisites in order to appreciate this movie; you have to be in on the joke right off the start as it is one long, stretched out, absurd and peculiar joke. You also have to let yourself be absorbed and immersed into the film in order to live the experience to the fullest. In other words, no distractions. Believe it or not, as busy and noisy as my house is, I was able to have such a moment on a quiet evening. This movie didn’t make me laugh a lot but it was hilarious. If that makes sense. There’s no true plot yet the story focusing on the 2 men’s relationship was endearing. The scale of the dialogue is so small that it becomes larger than life. Just like the wonderful settings of Ireland; the natural and grandiose decor versus the trivial situations occurring make things even more sensational. I know, it’s weird but it’s true. A minuscule capsule in space and time, this film is magnificent and should be seen by all. The music was a voyage and the sights were transporting. Even the animals were part of the travel; the dog, the miniature donkey, the horse… The horse literally made me laugh at some point. One thing that is NOT a prerequisite is liking the actors. For feck sake, like, I don’t really care about any of the cast member yet I loved them all here. Colin’s facial expressions were as good as they’ve ever been. My rating: 8.5/10
Palm Springs (2020 Prime): For the first minutes I was like, oh boy, not sure I’ll like this. Then my wife ditched on it like 15 minutes in because she “had better things to do”. I wasn’t too sure I’d finish it at that point but it turns out that I did. When the story gets in gear and finds its rhythm it becomes rich with fun and entertaining moments, situations and life concepts. The characters are not great but the actors did a good enough job bringing them to life. My rating: 7/10
Fallout (2024 Prime): I watched the final episode on Sunday evening. Overall, it was edgy, funny, quirky, colourful, action packed, violent and the story was great. My rating: 9/10
American horror stories S1 E5: Ba'al: Very well put together, has a nice build up to a double twist ending and one very violent scene but the problem with the short length is that 1 of the 2 twists was obvious from a mile away and the second one was not much more surprising. 6.5/10
E6: Feral: That was really fucking good. Probably my favourite in this season. It was just really fucking good. 8/10
House on haunted hill (Friday night special): I don’t see what’s the big deal on this one. It’s not particularly clever, good or anything. It’s was just below average I would say. Tales from the crypt this ain’t. My rating: 5/10
Gringo (Friday late night): Some good ideas are wasted on a messy script, some good actors are wasted on shitty roles, some dark humour potential wasted on crappy jokes (I didn’t laugh once). This movie was a disappointing FLOP. The 2 or 3 car crashes were very cool and I appreciated the happy ending but I will forget all about it by Friday next week I’m sure. Keanu this ain’t. My rating: 4.5/10
Q: the winged serpent (Saturday night special): This was way better than it had any right to be. Truth is, it was like a breath of fresh air. The feel good vibe of this bloody monster madness of a film won me over quickly. Just like a big circus tent dropped in the sky by helicopters to catch the dragon that, in his case, is… us! The audience! Ta da!! Now you get it. Made by movie lovers, for movie lovers and perfect for the MCMC. And let me tell you what; I believed MORE in the winged serpent than I did the love affaire between Edgerton and Newton in Gringo. My rating: 7.5/10
Tenebrae(Saturday late night special): I kind of liked the whole book writer/cop investigation that was going on. The soundtrack was so upbeat, loud and amazing. The actresses were… well… very good. Not my genre of film but I was able to appreciate. The entire night scene with the Doberman attacking the girl was very good and memorable. Then the killer finished it if proper, with an axe. As for the killer reveal, as VinceD said, it was not much of a surprise but I have to admit that the movie had me change my suspicions from him at least two times during the second half. My rating: 6.5/10
