People I know are raving about it. What would be good to order? NO Sushi! Only cooked food. I’m not familiar with the Japanese cuisine.
EWW...TOO "GROWN UP" FOR ME...I DID ONCE HAVE A FRIEND WHO MADE ME EAT AT A JAPANESE RESTAURANT WITH HIM....SHORTLY AFTER I NEARLY VOMITED ON THE TABLE HE ORDERED ME TERIYAKI CHICKEN...IT WAS PRETTY GOOD.

shareTempura: Deep fried shrimp and/or vegetables
Yakitori: BBQ chicken on a skewer
Udon Noodle: generally found in soups
Miso soup: This is hit or miss. I don't like it if it is too strong (dark brown in color). If it is yellow-golden in color it will probably be delicious
Yakisoba: Stir-fried noodles with protein/vegetables of choice
I like Sukiyaki. If you are okay with rare beef, tataki is really good, but it is just barely seared so may not be your cup of tea. It is more on the sushi end of things as tuna is a popular meat with tataki, but the beef is really good. Ramen is a safe bet. If you like pork Tonkatsu is good too. Karaage or Yakitori if you like chicken and want something other than teriyaki.
shareI do like my beef to say “Moo!”. It’s the only thing with a beating heart I prefer RARE. I like pork so I may try the Tonkatsu, but definitely Tataki. Thanks for the input. I’ll look at their menu. One thing is for sure. The Japanese are very clean vs the other popular Asian cooking.
Edit: Sukiyaki is out. No Tofu for me.
My partner can't eat tofu, so I try to get it when he's not around. :)

I have never drank Sake. At one time I could drink most people under the table, but a sniff of a good bourbon sets my head to reeling!

When we fly long haul, we normally stay 4-6 weeks away. I realised quite early on that the flights are one of the biggest costs, weather you go for 1 day, 1 week or 1 month.
My wife is from Jakarta, the capital and most of her family live there, which was thankfully a long way from that terrible disaster. Luckily, all her family were safe and thanks for asking.
I used to manage a print shop in Houston and one day a new Japanese restaurant opened up accross the street. They offered an all you can eat lunch buffet which included tempura, teriyaki and other Japanese dishes except you had to pay extra to get some sushi. My favorite was the huge bowl of all you can eat peel and eat boiled shrimp. Delicious! Anyway, try different things on the menu because Japanese cuisine is tasty.
shareThanks, but being from Florida & the MS Gulf Coast I’ve had my fill of boiled shrimp. Years ago when we lived near the east coast of Florida my husband and I would go shrimpin’ after he got home from work. I used to say it was more fun than eating them. ☺️ In MS we used to visit a casino restaurant , The Steamers. I would order the large Royal Reds. They are only caught in deep cold water. Dipping them in drawn butter was akin to eating lobster. Yummy!
shareSukiyaki is the great forgotten Japanese food. It's like a one pot meal. I make it all the time at home.
