📹 Security cameras

Do you have security cameras on your house? I know a lot of folks have Ring cameras. I don't, but a lot of my neighbors do, especially out back in the alley.

They also have lots of nighttime security lights that drive me a little crazy. Drive through the alley and every few feet you get more lights blinding you. I'm okay with the lighting, but please, folks, shade them so they're not blinding drivers.

What had me asking this is because I just put my trash out for collection tomorrow. I'd forgotten to do it earlier, but happily did actually remember before it was too late (holidays always have me forgetting what day of the week it is). But I'd already gotten ready for bed, so I was out there in my robe and all I could think of was whether and of my neighbors were watching me.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On second thought, maybe I should start dancing or something. If they're going to watch, I might as well be entertaining. No, I'm not going to do a striptease.

I have security cameras around my house. We've never really had any issues, but I do like that I can see what's happening around me without having to actually look out a window. :)

reply

The neighbor across the alley from me has cameras. He has posted a few videos on the NextDoor site of porch pirates. It means I can tell what areas of my garage and yard he can see. One time a porch pirate opened the box he stole in a corner of my yard. The package was taken from his nextdoor neighbor. I don't know how many cameras he has, but he followed this person from the neighbor's house, through his backyard and across the alley into my yard.

reply

That's creepy.

Signed, million man

reply

I have a RING camera at my front door.

reply

I think you're better off not knowing what goes on sometimes.

We have cameras at work and the night people are interesting to be polite.

reply

Probably. I was a little freaked when I found out that porch pirate was in my yard. Yep, better not to know.

There was one time, not too long ago, that the neighbor posted a video of a jerk who slashed a tire on a car belonging to my nextdoor neighbor. Why? No reason that I can think of. Well, maybe it was because he couldn't steal said neighbor's car - he's got some big time security for it. It's nice looking car, a Grand Prix, even though it's probably about 10 years old.

reply

Yes, we have cams and automatic yard lights.
Can't be too careful.

reply

These days, I don't think security lights deter thieves much.

reply

Ditto.

reply

we don't have any. the criminals have factored them in at this point.

reply

I think you're probably right. They wear hoodies and masks so they can't be easily identified. But there are still the stupid ones who look right into the camera...🤭

reply

i do some work for a townhouse complex and there are cameras everywhere. they have had numerous break ins. they send the cops the video and nothing comes of it.

reply

Maybe police are busy with more serious crimes? Here in the US, many police forces are very understaffed.

Maybe that townhouse complex should go old school and employ guard dogs.

reply

the individual unit owners can have dogs. you can't have guard dogs roaming the complex grounds.

reply

Private property is best.
Dogs, cams, gun and auto floodlights are a good system...the Police are often too far away to be of immediate help and you might need help within moments.

reply

"No, I'm not going to do a striptease."

Even though that would be most "entertaining". ☺
Better don't.
When a woman started dancing naked in the street, the men in the white jackets quickly arrived. 🥴

reply

Did you witness this naked dancing woman?? And the men in white jackets?

reply

No, but the 'event report' spread like wildfire in our little town back then.

reply

Okay. Just checking...🤭

reply

It's always good to check...whatever it is. 👁️👁️

reply

I have them all over the exterior of my house. You just can't trust anyone.

reply

Sad, isn't it?

reply

Yeah, and what's worse is that the justice system pretty much lets them get away with it.

reply

And if someone gets murdered or assaulted the system lets the creep loose in 20 or fewer years anyway.
It really boggles the mind.

According to the US department Of Justice Rapers generally serve 8 years and Murderers 17 years here in New York but there's a 'good time served' condition where if a convict did something really awful his sentence may be reduced by about one third if he behaves right! It's absurd.

These inmates should be kept under the watch of guards with shotguns (with full license to shoot to kill) and they should be forced to sweep, plow and blacktop the roadways, erase ugly graffiti and mow and rake the parks free of litter.

Instead we give these animals weight piles, recreation, food and cable TV.

WTH am I paying taxes for?

reply

They use the excuse of shorter sentences to avoid overcrowding. I don't give a shit. Stick them in a hole, throw some food down and tell them to put their shit into a bucket with a rope on it so they can reel it out. If you murder someone, you should be there until you die. Rape should be automatic 50 years.

reply

Walk in, carried out.
It's the only way to be sure they don't reoffend and most of us just want to live safely.
Damn, we work hard enough, we shouldn't have to worry about our families.

reply

I'd be scared if I was the family of a victim who helped lock them away and their sentence was up.

reply

Agreed.

Walk them in and carry them out.

reply

25 years in solitary confinement for listening to KISS in public.

reply

YEAH...THAT'S WHY...CREEPY PEEPING TOM PERVERT.

reply

Yeah, and with your precious daughter blossoming you have to be on alert. There’s something about those female, between the ages of 13-18, pheromones which bring out the beast in young guys.

reply

Interesting idea. 🤔
Well, I doubt that these are pheromones, because even "guys" of all ages who cannot smell at all (anymore) prefer "those females".

reply

I was mostly referring to teenage males because the pheromones may have caused new feelings along with a noticeable reaction.

reply

When it comes to teeny men, I tend to think of testosterone.

reply

They induce activity in other individuals, such as sexual arousal. I can believe testosterone has a role, but it depends on the level of testosterone a male has. Testosterone is relative to the sex drive, but something unbeknownst to the inexperienced male triggered the arousal.

reply

"I can believe testosterone has a role..."

No need to believe.
It's a proven fact. 😉

reply

I had a Ring at both doors plus a security system at my prior home. I’m signing on with another security system.

reply

If I can ever afford to get cameras, I'm going with ones that don't require a subscription for anything.

reply

I didn’t know Ring had started charging a monthly fee…like every business is doing. I had 2 Rings at my prior home and it was free for the basic plan. I sold in Dec. of 2021. I just checked the Ring website. Greedy arses started charging in 2022! At the time I didn’t care about the frills. All I cared about was seeing who was at my door.

Poor, pitiful Jeff Bozos (Amazon), he needs more funds which will begat him more on January 29 this year when Prime Video begins showing ads.

I purchased 2 of the “seeing eye” light bulbs which replaces the standard outdoor lightbulbs. I can pair them to my WiFi and see who’s at my door(s) using my Echo Show.

reply

Another thing to consider about Amazon's Ring cameras, afaik is they share videos with the police by default, without requesting consent of the homeowner.

If/when i purchase cameras, I'll be sure they have a live feed to interact with anyone via my smartphone, save to a local computer/hard drive in addition to a private cloud-based service to which only I and those I trust have access, which I can then share appropriate segments with the authorities.

Last time I looked, there were plenty subscription-free options, the only recurring expense being web space based, personal or otherwise. And if you are handy and have admin access to computers at work or another location, it's essentially free, you're just your own cloud provider, tech support, maintenance, etc.

reply

Had you ever coyotes on camera? 🐺

reply

Only when hiking. I don't have any security cameras at home yet. Around L.A. most wildlife are pretty used to humans. On one newsworthy occasion, a mountain lion was strolling down a city street one night in Santa Monica iirc. When hiking/mountain biking in the nearby Santa Monica mountains, I've had close encounters with deer, coyotes, raccoons, opossums, snakes and more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

reply

Certainly you're too fast for a mountain lion. 🚴‍♂️ 🏔️ 🦁

The rest of your (city) wildlife isn't really a problem. ☺
