What did you watch this week turtleneck? (10/29-11/04)

Hey not the best week but if it was to be done all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing.

My week:

Nightmare on elm street (2010 Netflix): The movie looks great and is well crafted plus the actors are pretty good but there were way too many jump scares for my taste. And let’s be honest, is a Freddy movie really a Freddy without Mr. Englund? It’s hard to answer yes to this question. Very hard. Also the script was pretty bad overall. My rating: 5.5/10

Friday the 13th (2009 Netflix): Again, this movie looks fresh and clean with some nice shots and settings but the characters/actors were pretty lame. It does also rely quite a bit on jump scares. A few good kills but not entirely satisfying as I feel like they went too easy on the gore. As for the story, we’ll, there is no story so never mind that. Also, I don’t like fake titties. They look… well, they look fake (that one girl though!) One last thing, Jason is such an opportunistic man, it’s fishy. Always at the right place at the right time. 👏 My rating: 5/10

The Lego Ninjago movie (2017 DVD): Bought it with my kids (1$) and when we got home and started watching it we realized we had seen it before. Bah, it’s a good movie plus we have all the other Lego movies so it completes our collection. No regret. My rating: 7/10

Two heads creek (Friday night special): Funny, quirky, bloody (the last 20mins were absolutely bonkers) and went by super quick. 1h25 of pure Friday night popcorn entertainment. But there was a funeral so, sad also. My rating: 7/10

Microwave massacre (Friday late night special): The first act was funny, bad and fun. The second act was getting dull and was very bad. The final act was crappy trash. My rating: 4.5/10

Bloody birthday (Saturday night special): I enjoyed the vibe, the atmosphere and the kid’s mindless killing spree was fun to watch but didn’t care much about the story. Not a total waste of time but definitely lacking a spark for me. My rating: 5.5/10

Crimewave (Saturday late night special): Bruce Campbell + Sam Raimi + Coen Bros + MCMC = A sure hit. A safe bet. A fun time. I thought the reason why I barely understood the movie was the fact that I was high and tired but turns out I’m not the only one who found it a bit confusing. Strange and unique for sure. My rating: 6/10

Turtleneck reporting for duty!

Bloody birthday (Saturday night special): Unique story brought down by lack of focus. tcrum said it best in the MCMC chat; there was no one to root for. Where was Laurie Strode when we needed her? My rating: 5.5/10

Crimewave (Saturday late night special): Great camera work, production and set design with a great vibe and atmosphere, I just wish they had remembered to write a script with a coherent story first. As I said in the MCMC chat, I kept expecting Roger Rabbit to pop into frame at any moment. 6/10

Pistol for 100 Coffins (1968) Italian-Spanish Spaghetti Western written and directed by Umberto Lenzi and staring Peter Lee Lawrence as Jim Slade, a conscientious objector who refused to fight for the south in the Civil War. Now newly released from prison, Slade takes up arms to deliver cold vengeance on the gunmen who murdered his family.

Not a bad movie, but if you’ve seen a lot of spaghetti’s, you’ve essentially seen this one too. Indeed, Pistol for 100 Coffins checks off most of the usual story beats and genre tropes:

• Man released or escapes from the law ✅
• Quest for Revenge ✅
• Stolen Cash or Gold ✅
• Older Gunfighter Mentors a Younger Hothead - ✅
• Incredible Photography ✅
• Amazing Score ❌

Perhaps the films biggest drawback is the lack of a score written by il maestro, Ennio Morricone, legendary composer of Sergio Leone’s films. A Morricone score would’ve brought this film to the level of Giulio Petroni's Death Rides a Horse (1968), a better film with a very similar story.

For fans of spaghetti’s this one is worth a watch, just keep in mind that if you’ve seen Death Rides a Horse or Leone’s films, you’ve seen this story better told before. 6.5 out of 10

The Thin Blue Line (1986) is a compelling documentary by Errol Morris that delves into the wrongful conviction of Randall Dale Adams, who was sentenced to death row despite a lack of solid evidence. This film is legendary because, during his investigation into the murder, Morris obtained an admission of guilt from the actual murderer during a taped interview. This crucial evidence eventually led to the reversal of Adams' sentence. 9.5/10

Okay, so my sister decided she wants to watch some bad movies with me the coming weeks for some one-on-one time. First up:

Movies
-Silent Fall (1994)
At first this thriller drama seems like another boring Richard Dreyfuss movie, but then the story just gets ridiculous. Still boring, though.

-Halloween (1978)
If it's on TV anyway, why not watch this great slasher classic?

-Perry Mason: The Case of the Murdered Madam (1987)

TV shows

-The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - marathon

-Neighbours - marathon

-Psych - marathon

Silent fall is on Tubi, you should’ve told us and the MovieClub would’ve joined you and your sister!

Halloween: 7.5/10

OK, next Friday we're going to watch Body Rock starring Lorenzo Lamas. How does the MovieClub feel about that?

reply

It's not streaming anywhere in Canada.

reply

I see it's on Youtube, though.

Holy shit, I e seen my fair share of bad flicks but this looks BAAAD!!

I can’t watch musicals but I’ll check The trailer and think about it. What time do you normally watch?

reply

Probably 10 p.m. local time. After I've had a drink.😁

No Sudden Move (2021) - a bit pretentious.
Magic (1978) - great.
A Haunting In Venice (2023) - liked it, despite Tina Fey.
Debug (2014)- forgot I had seen it, too lazy to change channel, still okay. The pretty ladies in tights didn't hurt.
