My previous apartment had a large rug that came with the apartment. After a year or so I purchased an inexpensive (on sale I think it was under $100) Bissell upright carpet cleaner (it looks like a vacuum cleaner). Even though I regularly and often vacuumed, I was astounded by the filthy water that was being extracted. It was black!! Yikes! And while it was never that black again (the bastard landlord must have skimped on cleaning before I moved in) it would still be quite dirty.
Moral of the story: Vacuuming is not enough
Yep. I'm so glad I switched over to laminate floors. Although, I do have an area rug. Bissell makes great products. I love the extractor. That's how I know im getting older when I'm excited about cleaning products, lmao.

shareIt's tough, if not impossible to keep carpeting truly clean. You've got the secret recipe - hardwood or engineered flooring with area rugs where you want them. I'd go with cheaper rugs for high-traffic areas so it's no big deal to replace when they are damaged or worn. I put a nicer quality, plushy one in the bedroom.
