What Happened to Basketball Hoops in America?

When I was growing up, there was only one family that did NOT have a hoop in their yard and/or driveway, but another one of our friends two doors down from him had a court in the front and the back to make up for it... Today I realized there isn't a single house on either streets of my neighborhood with a hoop. Five years ago, there was a mobile hoop, but that didn't last long. I asked a group of people the same thing (from all over the US in a live setting like this place) and a few said it was because the parents didn't like kids from adjacent neighborhoods playing on them.... If kids don't have some way like sports to get rid of their nervous energy, they'll find crime, or even worse, the phone!

reply

Because no one cares about hot potato with a hoop anymore. Kids should be playing real sports like hockey and rugby.

In the summer, we started playing rugby, and remember a birthday of mine being recorded, with all my friends in the backyard playing. We'd use the fence posts for a goal, and didn't really know how to play. Kinda improvised football, allowing one to kick or throw the ball in the "net" with a goalie. And we didn't play that two-hand touch like The Kennedys.

We played hockey in the winter. Behind our house was enough ice to play real ice hockey, or on the friend's side lot across the street although I preferred to play in the woods, which was a regular hang-out for us. It wasn't far, but secluded away from everyone.

We also had this huge field as you enter our street, which was perfect for football and baseball (until a few home runs hit the convenient store.... several times, although Ahmed never complained once!).

My cousin came over a few days ago and because of detours, we had to take a lot of neighborhood roads to get to my place, and even he noticed, "No kids ever play outside?" .. It was a nice day, and then I noticed no basketball hoops and if by some chance there is a kid outside, they're on a phone, standing.

"Something is wrong with your kid.. Give them these pills... They'll ruin his life when our liability runs out!"

reply

I stopped at my parents place twice last week. It's the same place they've lived since I was a kid. Both days were extremely hot, and I couldn't believe that there was absolutely no one doing anything in the streets. Not even adults sitting outside. Maybe we're just in the technology age.

reply

Exactly what I hear from all over the country from people who have kids and/or grandchildren. And childhood obesity and mental health is problematic, especially with the record and heartbreaking "deaths of despair".

I'm so happy I was 13 before I got AOL. I was also lucky that all the kids on my street were my age and boys. Even if we didn't play sports, we'd walk up and down the street while talking until we decided on something to do. I used to play basketball, but my friends would complain about not being able to wake up in the morning, and another one wanted to watch football, while I just liked hanging out and getting in shape while having fun.

I grew up in the 90s when internet really started to take off, but even then when I was on the web for a few hours, I used to think to myself: "okay, that's enough. Time to do something physical". Kids don't do that anymore and they see nothing wrong with it.

reply

Yeah, it's all they know, so they don't have our lives to compare with. For me, it was a last resort thing, although my brother and I would race the second we got home to the computer room downstairs. I did a lot of IMing with people from school, some chat room chatting, since our computer only had 4 MB Ram and opening a browser required 8 MB Ram, but sometimes I found ftp sites, which were just to download.

And it's only going to get worse. At least some of the other oldest people aren't stuck on them like it's another part of their body, but the Boomers are going to be dropping rapidly as a result of post WW2 fucking

reply

I can understand kids not playing outside when it's in the mid 90's but they aren't outdoors when it's nice either.

I love summer and I'm out on my patio regardless of the temperature - I don't get people who want to stay inside all of the time.

reply

Funnily enough they're becoming more common in the UK.

reply

Interesting, because something like this seems to happen if there was a UK star who made it big in the NBA or something, ala Yao Ming in China.. Those fan still love the Houston Rockets. The owner fired their President for tweeting "Free Taiwan" because it's too big of a market and they suspended showing their games (probably until the firing).

Out of curiosity, are there complaints? I asked this to a chat room full of American from all over, and a couple of people said they've been removing them to avoid ... black people from other cities coming in and playing.

reply

Unfortunately, basketball is one of those sports that I know little about.

Over here the hoops tend to be attached to the garage so that the kids can shot a few hoops, as opposed to being glued to the internet, in the safety of their back garden.

No complaints that I’m aware of in ‘Sunny’ Bournemouth, but being officially the 9th most expensive place to live in the world, it’s all a bit posh here, lol.

THERE IS A COURT IN MY YARD...I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SHOOT MUCH LATELY DUE TO A SHREDDED SHOULDER...BUT IT'S OUT THERE...IT'S ALWAYS OUT THERE...SINCE THE DAYS WHEN I WOULD SPEND 6 TO 10 HOURS A DAY HOOPING.

reply

That tiny court is to make sure your probation officer is close by.

reply

MY SHIT IS REGULATION...HAND MEASURED WITH PAINTED LINES.

reply

6 to 10 hours!?

Man, you a BALLER!

reply

I SURE WANTED TO BE...I WAS OBSESSED FOR 15 YEARS OR SO...ESPECIALLY THE THREE...I LOVE SHOOTING THE THREE.

reply

Im pretty good at handling the ball myself too.

reply

Seems strange. Almost every house on my street has one.

reply

Same here...we have one also.

If I had to wager a guess...I would say that, in some areas of the U.S., participation in basketball has decreased over the years. Back when I was in high school in the mid-80s, basketball was so popular. I spent a lot of time back then playing basketball and shooting outside on a dirt/gravel court (The movie "Hoosiers" detailed that pretty well...good ol' Jimmy Chitwood!).

reply

Yeah I would agree with that. I still see kids playing every time I am at the park which is nice. I have a hoop myself and still shoot around here and there a couple times a week. During the summers back in HS and college I would play probably every other day with friends and around eight hours on days off. We'd play from like noon to dark it was so much fun. But as you say, maybe the popularity of it has decreased.

reply

THE PHONE!...IS THE ANSWER FOR SEEING LESS HOOPS...WHEN I WAS A KID I WAS FASCINATED WITH MOVIES AND TV...AS I AM TODAY...BUT YOU HAD TO BE IN FRONT OF THE TV...WE ONLY HAD ONE TOO...SO I PLAYED OUTSIDE A LOT...MY COUSIN GREW UP BEFORE PHONES TOOK OVER BUT TVS WERE IN EVERY ROOM AND HE PLAYED OUTSIDE MUCH LESS THAN I DID...NOW THE TVS ARE IN YOUR HAND AND POCKET.

reply

I'd say there's a lot of truth to what you wrote. Our TV barely got 3 channels (NBC, ABC, CBS...and we had to go outside and manually turn the TV antenna if we wanted to watch ABC or CBS). We were just outside playing all the time.

I've always thought that's when you get really good at basketball...not during the season, but in the Spring and Summer, when basketball isn't in season. That's when one can really work on his/her game and improve, learn new things, etc. That's a big reason why I think things like AAU ball are detrimental to kids learning about the game. You need time to experiment/try new things and you can't really do that with AAU/travel ball.

reply

I would agree with that. The phone is to blame for a lot of things.

reply

Like other users have also mentioned, my hood has hoops every 2 or 3 houses.

I broke mine when I moved and bought a new one summer after.

Ballin’ is a must round here partner.

reply

I've noticed towns and cities are allocating more money than in the past towards basketball courts, which are way better than a driveway hoop. Other sports too. My city constructed a kick ass street hockey court and the skate park has been redone too. There's even a bocci ball court! None of this stuff was around when I was growing up.

reply

Our hoop was in the backyard and we had a spotlight for night basketball.
