🌽 State Fairs 🍦🍧

Americans, do you attend your state's state fair?

I do not. In fact, I boycott the local news because all their news programs are broadcast from the fair during its 10-day run.

Just not my thing. Too many people and too much traffic getting there and finding a place to park.

reply

I used to attend a county fair back when I attended a summer day camp.

reply

County fairs seem a little more personal. Not that I've ever been to one.

reply

County fairs can be really enjoyable, or totally lame.

Or really unusual. Once I went to the Marin County Fair, and got my picture taken with the original C3PO and R2D2. George Lucas lives there, and had loaned a collection of SW props to the fair, that was cool.

reply

That’s a fair question.

reply

No.
Last time I went to a state fair I was visiting friends in Massachusetts and saw Def Leppard headline the event. That was about 20 years ago.

reply

When I lived in Minnesota, yes, I liked it. As a native New Yorker, I didn't even know there was such a thing as State Fairs. What would a NYC exhibit be? Hookers and muggers?

I saw ZZ Top and Roger Daltrey at the Minnesota State Fair.

reply

Then you know exactly what I'm talking about. The Great Minnesota Get-Together. Also called the Great Minnesota Sweat-Together, as it will be this weekend. Beginning Friday, we're in for nearly a week of mid- to upper 90s.

reply

Parking sucks, as I recall. We end up paying to park on someone's lawn.
Biggest laugh are the hot dog stands that have a sign that says ᡃˑᡐᡒ˒ᡗ ᡃ Foot Long Hot Dog
I always had a good time.
I've never had cheese curds.

reply

Cheese curds make me think of curdled milk. I have no desire to try them, either.

reply

I haven't been in several years, but my State Fair is fairly close and has interesting stuff to see, and I do like shopping at booths.

But I always leave before it gets late, because at least when I was going, every lowlife in town would buy a ticket when the sun started to get low. The State Fair after dark could be pretty dubious, at least several years ago.

reply

I don't doubt that are some interesting things to see, but nothing that would make me want to fight the crowds and traffic to attend. There were two years when I went only to help my mom out at the "Milk Booth" because her singing group (Sweet Adelines) used the proceeds from their pay at the booth as a way to raise funds. We got free admission because we were working there, but I never hung around. I just got in and out.

reply

the annual end of summer canadian national exhibition is on now. i haven't gone in over 20 years. it was great place to go when we were teens to kill a summer day

reply

I can believe that. Some schools around here used to take a field trip to the fair, but that didn't happen every year. It depended upon when school started and the fair ended.

reply

do you attend your state's state fair?

Wait, every state has their own fair?

reply

Every state has their own renaissance faire as well.

Signed, million man.

reply

Actually, I don't know if this is true or not. But I grew up in states that have them. They're held at different times, but usually during summertime. Ours is held in late August, as a last hurrah before school starts. The last day of the fair is always Labor Day.

reply

I always heard characters in movies talking about "the state fair" and I always assumed it was all the same state they were talking about.

reply

Not for several years now. It used to be fun as a kid back in the 80s at Cal Expo in Sacramento, CA with the rides and food and normal people you would run into before recent times when gangbangers took over & decided it was more fun to have fights there after the sun went down. Too bad.
