What did you tenderloins watch this week? (08/06-08/12) CLOSED

Another week gone by. Hopefully this thread will get more action than it did last week. I’ll blame it on the summer vacations but don’t make it an habit.

Freaked (1993 TV): The opening credits were very fucking cool. Then, not even 10 minutes in it, I was already on the floor rolling. This here is my kind of funny shit. With the costumes, special effects and script, this made for an extravagant, colourful, fun, slimy, sludgy and grotesque film! It would make a nice combo with The Monster Squad I think. The last 15 minutes weren’t quite as funny but nothing much to complain about. My rating: 7.5/10

Le Brio (2017 TV): « After an incident, a brilliant professor known for his outbursts is forced to mentor the student he wronged for a speech contest. » Everything you’d expect such a French dramedy to do, it does and pretty well at that. My rating: 6.5/10

Here comes the boom (2012 DVD): This movie is like candy to me. Saw it alone, saw it again with my wife and now it was with my sons. I enjoyed it every single time and I will even make a bold statement; It’s a better MMA movie than Warrior (2011). Oh yeah, I said it. My rating: 7.5/10

Transformer 3: Dark of the moon (2011 Bluray): Weakest script and my
least favourite of the bunch but still very entertaining. It lost point with its cringe romance, especially the break-up scene. Also the scene with the Russians; one second they’re pointing guns at them and the second after they reveal Top Secret information. Also, you know how movies make you despise a certain character only to reveal later that he was a bad guy all along? Well they did this times 10 in this one. On the upside, adding Oscar winner, Frances McDormand and Oscar nominated John Malkovich was not a bad move, the red oil splatters in fights was a good addition and by the time the building is crumbling and we are served with over 45 minutes of relentless action like only Bay can do we forget all that nonsense. My rating: 7/10

Rescued by Ruby (2022 Netflix): My parents watched this with one of my sons and said that I should watch it with the other one. I was sceptical but IMDb has it at 7.2 and RT at 100% so that clear any doubts I had about watching it. First thing is, I love dogs but only dislike a handful of them, Border Collies being one of them. Also, I found the movie a bit boring to be honest. The best part was the final 10 minutes and it was not worth it. My rating: 5/10

What happened to Monday (2017 TV): Weird film we got here. What’s even weirder is the amount of 8, 9 and 10 ratings. The concept is good but too many details didn’t make sense or bothered me. It got so many praises that I feel the need to destroy it a little bit. Here I go: How does one chops half a finger falling from a skateboard? Who hides the most important “secret button” in a bookshelf where we can find within a minute of search? The palm screens looked faked. Woken Dafoe had like 10 minutes of screen time. Glenn Close’s performance was terrible. A professional sniper wants to shoot girl but for some reason shoots another random dude first, making her aware and allowing time to take cover. Government agents kill civilians without a second thought. Within 15 seconds, girl chops off dead guy finger, attached it to her hand allowing her to fire his fingerprint gun. One of the 7 sisters had a secret boyfriend so that means that she saw him 1 day a week, outside her work hours? It makes no sense. The whole exercise felt rushed and I feel like they made another movie and with the leftovers they made this one. *Fun fact: Quebec ratings are crazy. This movie is rated 8+ yet there is a lot of blood, graphic violence and one graphic sex scene. 13+ would be more suitable. My rating: 4/10

Run! Bitch Run! (2009 Friday Night special): A fairly suitable trashy Grindhouse low-budget flick that somehow plays is safe, dare I say? The soundtrack was actually good and groovy with nice guitar and bass. It gave each scenes that much more power and rhythm. Final act was good until final unnecessary second. My rating: 6/10

Waxwork (1988 Saturday night special): Werewolves, vampires, mummies, zombies , witches, monsters and teenage romance; all the most nightmarish and horrific aspects of life presented at their best. It was a lot of fun to watch. My rating: 7/10

Transformers 3 5/10
Run! Bitch Run! 6/10
Waxwork 8/10

I'm not watching much other than rewatching Veronica Mars. But since I missed last week I'll give you both weeks.

Home Movie (2008) 5/10
I remember liking this one a lot the first time I watched it. This time around I was feeling pretty meh about it. It was really difficult to care about either of the parents. It wasn't unwatchable or anything, and it's better than a lot of FF movies, but I just didn't feel it today.

The Masque of the Red Death (1964) 7.5/10
I really like the aesthetic of this film. It's so colourful. It's like Corman was actually trying to make an arthouse film. Probably my favourite of Corman's Poe films.

Deuces Wild (2002) 5/10
I did watch this when it came out, but I couldn't remember anything about it. It's not really a memorable film. It's pretty cliché, and it's really not original at all. Best thing I can say about it is that it has a pretty good cast.

Dark City (1998) 9/10
I have such a difficult time reviewing this movie. I think the noir aspect really sets it apart from other sci-fi movies of the time. The only one which might slightly compare is maybe The Thirteenth Floor (1999). I think it still holds up. At a time when there seems to be no real originality left in Hollywood, this is a breath of fresh air. It certainly sticks in your brain after watching. I enjoyed it as much today as I did when I saw it in the theatre 25 years ago.

The Italian Job (2003) 6/10
A mildly fun watch that I've seen a few times. It's very generic, and predictable. Still though, there is a bit of charm. It's a shame Norton phoned in his performance, as it could have been an interesting character.

reply

corman was fine when he had something to work with.

reply

Ever since I saw American Hero, I’m trying to see everything Stephen Dorff did. Deuces wild is still on my list.

Dark city: 9/10

The Italian job: 7/10

reply

Stephen Dorff is why I watched Deuces Wild. It does have a pretty good cast.

reply

If you ever get the chance to see American Hero please do.

This movie touches so close to home with me and he gives a fantastic performance.

reply

It's on Tubi. You should put it up for a watch party if you haven't already.

reply

You’ll think I’m crazy but I’m a bit scared to put it. I’m like sure most people won’t like it and it will make me sad.

reply

You guys watched Run! Bitch Run!.....

Hi there.

Transformer 3: Dark of the moon 5/10
Run! Bitch Run! 6/10
Waxwork 6/10

I watched:

It Always Rains on Sunday 1947 6/10 Performances are fine, but it felt a little uneven and the pacing was off. I liked the cinematography and there were a couple interesting moments.

The Pajama Game 1957 6/10 Doris Day is good, but John Raitt is miscast and can't match her. He isn't likeable enough and there is no chemistry between the two. I liked some of the singing, although most of the songs are forgettable. Some parts of the story don't work, but there are enough fun moments to make it worth a watch.

Hollow Triumph 1948 7/10 Good performance by Paul Henreid elevates this interesting and well written noir.

Strange Illusion 1945 6/10 I thought this was a decent film noir, but not as good as some of the other ones I have seen.

Boy Takes Girl 1982 7/10 The film feels a little uneven and the tone seems off at times, but overall I enjoyed it. Some of the performances are good and there are some interesting and cute moments.

Princess 2014 7/10 This was a pretty interesting and effective look at a difficult subject matter. Excellent performance from Shira Haas. Worth watching.

Happiness for Beginners 2023 6/10 This is fine. It's reasonably pleasant, although fairly predictable. Acting is decent and the story is what you would expect. It's an alright way to pass the time, but not something you will likely remember in a few months.

The Swan 2017 6/10 Beautiful cinematography and a wonderful performance by Gríma Valsdóttir elevate the film. Storywise, not everything comes together and it didn't always work as well as it should have.

Cause for Alarm! 1951 6/10 I liked Loretta Young's performance, but overall the film was just alright.

Six Bridges to Cross 1955 6/10 Tony Curtis is good. The story is just alright.

Calcutta 1946 6/10 This was just okay. Should have been more interesting.

Big House, U.S.A 1955 6/10 This was a decent, but not exceptional, film noir.

T-Men 1947 6/10 This was fine.

The Blue Gardenia 1953 7/10 Good performances in this well written noir.

Dark Passage 1947 8/10 Good performances in an entertaining noir.

Run! Bitch Run! 2009 6/10 The acting and writing aren't very good, but there are some trashy entertaining moments. Not everything works though and the ending doesn't fit with the movie.

Hell Comes to Frogtown 1988 5/10 Not as fun or as entertaining as it should have been. Needed more frogs. Frogs are sexy.

Shock 1946 7/10 This was a pretty good film noir.

Please Murder Me 1956 8/10 Good performances from Raymond Burr and Angela Lansbury in this entertaining noir.

reply

you watched a bunch of film noir last week as did i. i always thought please murder me was a prelude to perry mason.

And you did great too! Plus it was funny.

I don’t even know how you did those stars things but it looks cool.

As for me, I write my reviews immediately after watching the film and then update as the days pass by. I often take notes while watching too. Like that, I don’t forget anything and it comes easy.

I’m glad we are also Here comes the boom Brothers. We discover more and more common tastes. Just to honour our movie bound, I ordered Cool hand Luke Deluxe edition.

It is a lot of typing work if you've watched a lot of movies.
Try using the speech to text icon, like I'm doing right now. It's a lot easier if you're feeling lazy. It's a little microphone on my kindle fire.....Although it won't do it in all caps.

Death Wish 3 (1985) - so over the top. new york wasn't that bad in the 80s. watch it for bronson and his deadpan one liners 6/10

Outside the Wall (1950) - another film noir from richard basehart. i don't know why he didn't take the money and run. love these film noir because of the character actors - harry morgan and signe hasso. 6.5/10

Convicted (1950) - not dark enough for a prison film. the warden character was just too nice. glenn ford was never quite good enough to be an a lister. 6/10

The Man Who Haunted Himself (1970) - finally saw it after years of hearing about it. roger moore said this was his favorite movie and he does come through with a very good performance playing a doppelganger. 7/10

I’d like to see Death wish 3 but our Canadian tubi took it off. :(

The Harbinger (2022) tubi 6.5
Desperate to leave her Covid quarantined life, a woman jumps at the chance to visit a friend away from the safety of her family to help her deal with a series of troubling nightmares.

It started out very slow, and then got very confusing, but it definitely kept my attention.

Sweet

You should try watching movies.

I tried watching The Andromeda Strain, but it was so boring and ridiculous and when they started hurting animals (in real life) i just turned it off. Terrible movie.

Movies

-Child's Play (1988)
I hadn't seen this in almost 3 decades. I wouldn't say it was terrible, but it was definitely more comedy than horror! It did make me laugh out loud (unintentionally) a couple of times.

-Rear Window (1954)
Pretty much a summertime classic.

-The French Connection (1971)
I'd never seen this movie before, can you believe it? It just always looked too ugly to me...and it still does! However, it's definitely not a bad movie, with some exciting scenes. But it did bother me so many innocent people got killed because of Gene Hackman's character!

TV shows

-The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - marathon
I just got in the mood to rewatch this series (although it's mostly on in the background). I do have to admit I always had an issue with Will's disrespectful attitude and even more so nowadays.

Child’s play: 8.5/10

Rear window: 7.5/10

Fresh prince: 8/10
