What did you watch this week partner? (07/02-07/08) CLOSED

Another good week of movie watching and popcorn eating:

Man of the house (1995 Disney+): Unfortunately, this one didn’t hold up like other childhood classics of mine did (ex: Jungle 2 Jungle or Problem child). Two of my three kids almost bailed out half way in out of boredom. I don’t think it was THAT bad but not very good either. Too many jokes fell flat this time around. My rating: 5/10

Crazy rich Asian (2018 TV): Well put together with some good acting from all parts but I found it a bit too conventional for all the high praises it got. A fun, beautiful and sweet romantic flick for sure. My rating: 7/10

Spring (2014 Tubi): This was a nice surprise, recommended by none other than Fredburroughs. It’s another romance you’ve seen a hundred times before but with a neat new horrible twist that never took away any of the genuineness of it all. My rating: 7/10

Desperate measures (1998 TV): This is another solid and effective action-thriller from then 90’s. Keaton’s performance definitely elevates the whole project and I appreciated that the movie didn’t take itself too seriously. Light, good, fun. Although I am wondering, am I the only one who’d like to see this very same film but switch the two lead’s roles? My rating: 6.5/10

Finding Nemo (2003 DVD) : Okay, I was in the wrong. For 20 years I thought I’d dislike this movie and thought it looked bad and that was based off 5 minutes of screening time and a look at the movie poster. Eck, for so long I thought Nemo was a blue fish. Nah, the story was very exciting, the graphics were beautiful and Nemo is orange. I was in the wrong. My rating: 8/10

The VelociPastor (2018 MovieChat Friday night special): This is the perfect example of how to make a movie with not much more than a few wild-and-down-to-ride actors , a rubber dinosaur, ninja suits, and some cameras. And when I say not much more I mean basically nothing else. This Brendan Steere guy is such a genius for pulling this off. This title goes right up there along favourites of mine like Black Dynamite. My rating: 7.5/10

Dog eat dog (2016 MovieChat Friday night special): The opening 10 minutes were a pure blast and promised a possible extraordinary film coming up but unfortunately it didn’t hold up as it quickly lost its drive and started losing itself in a lot of superfluous dialogues. The characters were fun but Dafoe was the highlight, the story was messy but still enjoyable. The heavy dialogues made me lose focus a few times and what with all the name dropping (Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Nirvana, Bogart, Jackie Chan (this one was funny though)…). I enjoyed it but don’t think I’d rewatch it except for the opening scene. My rating: 6.5/10

Warlock (1989 MovieChat Saturday night special): This is a very good late night fantasy popcorn movie even though I fell asleep on it at exactly 1h09. I finished it about 10 minutes ago and I think the second half was even better than the first. I don’t know if there is a better warlock movie somewhere so you look tithere and I’ll search tithere. My rating: 7/10

Warlock - 8/10: A lot better than similar horror-lite films of the same era. Certainly more intelligent with stronger characters instead of just bumbling boobs who get beat up on a lot.

New to me:

The Dark Divide (2020) - 8/10: Your normal incompetent-hiker-with-stuff-on-their-mind. The emotional elements of the film are understandable but not presented well. The environmental message is done well without being heavy handed. I normally get into these films a lot more but this just fell ever so slightly short. It had a lot of lost potential but it wasn't insulting. Really a 7.5 but I gave it the boost for not getting sloppy.

The Straight Story (1999) - 8/10: A bit better than I expected. Good pacing, not very airy but open enough. Thankfully not sappy for a film that could have easily have exploited emotions easily. Certainly not high adventure but a good arc of several encounters on the slowest roadtrip ever. My only real complaint is that, while I appreciate the reason for it, the ending doesn't make proper use of as good of an actor as Harry Dean Stanton.

Knock at the Cabin (2023) - 7/10: I'll probably notch it up to 8/10 if I watch it again. It was better than expected but certain mechanics of the story don't make total sense to me yet and, knowing MNS, probably won't ever. Good looking film that drags on a bit a couple of times but doesn't suffer badly from it. In fact, it was probably done on purpose to build some level of unease in the viewer. My first Dave Bautista film, I wasn't expecting much but he did really well. I was glad to see it.

Upgrade (2018). 8/10 This was recommended to me by a friend who said it was the best movie he'd seen this year. It was definitely excellent I would say... the Matrix meets Tron meets AI. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6499752/?ref_=rvi_tt

Set in the near-future, technology controls nearly all aspects of life. But when the world of Grey, a self-labeled technophobe, is turned upside down, his only hope for revenge is an experimental computer chip implant.

Children of the Corn (2020)5.5/10 The 1st 45 minutes of this movie was actually pretty good. I had high hopes, but as the reviews said, then it just gets completely implausible. Still fun though.

The VelociPastor (2018) 5.5/10

Barely Lethal (2015) 6.5 /10 Absolutely idiotic, but a lot of fun. I would suggest this to anyone with a daughter under 15. Samuel l. Jackson, Jessica Alba, and Hailee Steinfeld.

Warlock (1989 ) - i thought it was funny how these guys jump ahead 300 years and have no questions about modern technology like electricity. the movie is kind of fun just don't ask a lot of questions about how things are done. 6/10

The Presence (2010) - what was mira sorvino trying to do in this. the character was stupid and then there was the creepy boyfriend who was more creepier than the ghosts. it's also unclear who the first ghost was suppose to be. 4/10

Movies

-Anatomy of Murder (1959)
It started out okay until the murder trial began and the movie became very manipulative and Jimmy Stewart turned into a giant ass. It's also way too long and the jazz music throught the movie was also awful.

-House of Usher (1960)
All the changes they made to the original Poe story actually made the movie less creepy, especially the addition of the love story. The acting was also very bad. Vincent Price was not entertaining.

-High and Low/Tengoku to Jigoku (1963)
This Japanese police procedural movie actually wasn't that bad, but it got really drawn out near the end and the ending itself was very abrupt.

TV Series

-Road to Avonlea - marathon

-Eastenders - marathon of very old episodes

High and low: I really wish I could see this movie.

I also wish you stop posting in the thread once it’s CLOSED!

Haha!

I’m just kidding, it’s part of your charm, don’t change.
