It was a cameo if you can call it that.
The story goes that Cruise was on the set visiting. He commented to Emilio Estevez that he had never been in a Western. Since he wasn't a member of the cast, Estevez offered have him put him in as an extra. They dressed him up so he was unrecognizable. When they shot the scene, Billy the Kid walked in and blew him away before anything else happened.

Rumor is that Cruise had Estevez killed off in the first five minutes of Mission Impossible as payback.
