What's the weirdest thing you've ever eaten?

For me, probably frogs legs (not bad) and escargot (skateboard bushings in butter and garlic).

When I go for sushi, I regularly have uni (sea urchin roe) an I like it, so I don't consider it weird, although many people do.

I'd like to know if anyone has tried hakarl ("rotten" shark) or Surstromming (lightly salted fermented Baltic Sea herring) that make some people throw up just from smelling the can being opened.

Gordon Ramsey puked on TV, trying hakarl and there are numerous videos of people puking from both of them.

So MC, what's the weirdest thing you're tried?

Tarantula - Vietnam 🇻🇳
Locust - Thailand 🇹🇭
Monkey Brain - Indonesia 🇮🇩
Dog - Indonesia 🇮🇩

Food-wise, I'd say durian fruit. I know it's not top-tier weird, but that was some funky smelling fruit I'd never eat again. I've tried weirder foods but nothing that actually tasted weird like that.

Non-food wise, I've probably tried a crayon or something like that as a kid.

Rattlesnake. I caught a four foot long rattlesnake when I was a young teen. I gutted it, skinned it then grilled it on a gas grill. It was tasty. It tasted just like chicken but was very chewy.

reply

That was a big snake!
I’ve eaten Rattlesnake and yes, it does taste like chicken, it’s actually pretty good.

Rabbits taste like chicken as well with a porkish aftertaste and consistency. Very good meat on a rabbit but not a lot of it.

I’d like try Squirrel as well but the old timers say only the rear legs are good eating.

reply

Rabbit is delicious but I have no desire to eat squirrel. Eating a rodent doesn't appeal to me. 🐀

I’ll eat most anything but I found caviar and pickled herring to be just nasty.

reply

Agreed. I'm told that I need to taste better caviar but I find it boring to gross.

reply

I’ve been told this as well but once with the caviar was enough for me.
Nasty!

reply

I’ll eat almost anything.

Horse burger in Belgium when I was 9. It was good but I feel weird thinking about it. Makes me feel crazy like I ate a human.
Rocky Mt Oyster (bull testicle) Excellent.
Kopi Luwak coffee (beans harvested from poop of civet, a cat-monkey) Smooth.
Raw herring sandwich. Revolting.

reply

My wife and I had Kopi Luwak in Bali.

reply

Kinda overrated. Good, sure.

reply

Strong and gritty - had to be done though.

reply

Gritty? Sounds like they didn't pour it slow enough.

reply

They were probably punishing my wife for marrying a Bule.

When I visited Finland, I tried reindeer tagliatelle at an airport restaurant. It was quite a strong but pleasant flavour and I feel quite guilty for saying that as they’re such beautiful creatures, but it was the only thing on the menu that sounded ok. 😅

I had a whale burger in Japan. It's fatty and oily. I probably wouldn't do it again. I didn't want to offend our host. But Jesus the Japanese will eat anything that comes out of the water.

reply

Mealworm larvae.
