Any other fans of The Doors?

If so, let's chat about this awesome American band.

I have their self titled debut album both on vinyl and recently on CD.
When they originally put out Break on Through, the lyric was, "Everybody loves my baby. She get high."
They censored out the "high" which is why you hear Morrison sing, "She get."
The Doors do an awesome version of this on Absolutely Live where they carry on with vocals of, "Hiiiigh high, the woman get high," etc.
Anyway, on the CD they restored it with the lyric of, "high," which is pretty cool to listen to how it is supposed to be.

Discuss or add any thoughts you have on The Doors.

Indian Summer - underated song

I came really close to using this song for the bride and groom dance at my wedding reception, but I caved in and chose a more traditional one. I regret not using it now.

I think they are great.

I was surprised at Jerry Garcia's opinion (Grateful Dead is my favorite band). He pretty much hated them. I wonder, though, if he was a little jealous of their chart success (two #1's) and especially of Jim Morrison's sex appeal (Garcia was never exactly the sexy rock star):

I am also a Deadhead.

Interesting coming from Garcia where The Doors did the same thing the Dead did.
Played live a hell of a lot different than studio with improvisation.

Have you ever heard live Doors?
Not only do they play epic jams on instruments but Morrison adds in vocals with scat singing and just riffs.
It is really incredible stuff and I think I may prefer them live to studio where with the Dead sometimes I prefer studio to live.

Yes!
That is what I am talking about.

Nice visuals to go with it.

David Crosby also hated them

Thanks for the link...I did not know that!
Maybe he was also jealous of his good looks/sex appeal :)

Long time Doors fan here. Before the internet was a thing I had around 20 books on the band and i had many copies of Doors Collector Magazine in the 90s. I had a tape case with about 30 bootlegs at one time also. In fact, I enjoyed the bootlegs so much I went for years without playing the albums.

I saw Robbie Krieger in concert this past summer and it was an absolute honor to be there.

Awesome stuff!
Thanx for sharing!

Were those bootlegs live and/or studio stuff?
I have a bootleg of a tape of them live but it is before they really found their improvised jamming sound on stage.

I take it you have read, No One Here Gets Out Alive?
What did you think of that?
It seems a lot of that made it into The Doors movie directed by Oliver Stone.

reply

Lots of concerts, jam sessions and the like all of varying degrees of sound quality. I kept a tape deck in my truck, rather than CD, all the way into the 2000s partially because of those bootlegs.

I think that’s one of the first ones I read, paperback with a yellow cover, if I remember correctly. They all blend together and I haven’t read any since the 90s. I’m not big a fan of the film, with the picture it painted. Nice performance by Kilmer though.

One of the best rock band ever.

Yes, I'm a fan, but not as knowledgeable about them as some here are. Robbie Krieger was such an underrated guitarist, IMO (and songwriter...a lot of people don't know that he wrote a lot of their big hits, not Jim Morrison). At one point in my life, I could play his solo in "Light My Fire" pretty much note-for-note...he was a big influence on my own guitar playing.

Ray Manzarek was a big influence on my favorite pianist George Winston as well.

Favorite songs: "Break On Through (To The Other Side)", "Light My Fire, "Touch Me," "Roadhouse Blues," "Love Her Madly."

I appreciate what you shared and I like the George Winston CD called Winter so I know who you mean.
