OSHA was founded in 1970. 1970!!! At least two people posting on this thread are older than OSHA!

I think there were some safety regulations in place before the official creation of OSHA, but workers still died. There were probably zero Federal regulations when these films were taken, back then people dying of workplace negligence wasn't considered the government's business.

I did a lot of heavy construction between my mid 20s and 30s. One of the most dangerous positions I ever found myself in one day was while working on bridge construction over a major river in my state. My crew was involved in building the pillars. That involved driving 50 ft. steel pilings into the ground with what's known as a diesel hammer. My assigned task that particular day was to climb the boom of the crane to the top of the piling positioned into place, and connect it to the hammer. I basically straddled that thing with just a metallic stirrup and no harnessing equipment whatsoever. When I finished, my boss yelled up at me that the crane was not available to return on, I had to find my own way, and I did. He said, I "looked like a monkey, clawing steel all the way down." When I finally hit terra firma, my legs felt like rubber and I was trembling with relief.😁
