Harry & Megs underwater in the UK, the doc didn't help

But Willy & Katie are going strong. Looks like the royalty is in pretty good shape, to the extent we could view these polls as some sort of proxy on the institution of the royalty itself :

Chuck is underwater, Cammo is pretty much on the bottom of the sea.

Megalicious still hadn't figured out that her goofy 'renaissance days' rendition of a curtsy was viewed as a bi' o' a mick taking. First impressions apparently matter - a lot.

Government sponsored Kardashians.

And as they hit their 40s, the public will just see them as old and bitter. They can't win.

reply

I suppose winning for them is holding onto their privilege, which they've been doing for centuries. There's always cute new kids, faimily adventures & drama - occasionally something noble, something silly, something squalid.

They're on far more solid ground now than they were, say, prior to WWI, when pro-socialist anti-royalist sentiment was rather keen. George V was a a very canny fellow, did a bang up PR rehab job, wind-aided by two world wars, one existential.

Queen Elizabeth II was the last of the Olde Time Royals. It's just not the same without her.

To complete the comparison to Wallis Simpson, Meg should comment that she thought Harry in the Nazi costume was kind of sexy.

reply

Hilarious. How stupid is Harry, even as a college kid or whatever, sporting Nazi gear. Did he go to school, or get schuled at home by his cherman tutors ?

For anyone interested, the rather tragic tale of Prince Charles Edward, Victoria's grandson, yanked from Eton and forced into the life of a German prince, who , through many events not of his own doing, ultimately gravitated into a role as a creature of the Nazis, a pet of Hitler.

Here is the detailed rendition of the Duke of Windsor's treason :

Much of the detailed background of the DOW's treachery, general shitbaggery, has only come out in the last decade.

It might perhaps have appeared hard hearted of the Royals/Establishment to freeze him out so completely, in earlier days. With all this new confirmation, its hard to see them doing otherwise.

The man was a contemptible rogue.

reply

Back when I was a kid we used to goose step around giving the Nazi salute and fall about laughing. We just thought it was funny.

That actually seems like quite a bold step.

The entire story about Meghan being told she had to curtsy to the queen when they first met is so suspect. Meghan was and still is an American citizen and as such she was not required to curtsey to any member of the family.

I suppose that once she because a member of the Royal Family, the rules changed, at least within the family and in the court of public opinion. It certainly would have raised eyebrows if she hadn't curtsied after she was married.

reply

The royal family bow & curtsy. Anyone aspiring to become a part of it bows & curtsies. I don't understand if she was unprepared for it, or was obstinate about it, or what the nuanced truth is.

I think the problem almost certainly must have been that she made a mockery of the gesture. Like a clown. An awkward good-faith attempt would likely have been viewed more kindly. It was remembered as her not believing it was expected, or something along those lines.

But yeah, I wasn't there. The fact it left a bad taste is the only evidence we have that something about the incident was off, perhaps the first bad tiding of a relationship which soon went off the tracks. Maybe the royals are just mean waspish funddy-duddies. I hope not. They should at least be kind, god knows they have good reason to be. Bringing in a commoner would have to entail some patience, teaching. But again, was she teachable, or was she just entitled ?
