Name a movie that is both brilliant and terrible

Not one of those "so bad it's good" movies, but a movie that is critically acclaimed yet had some major flaws.

I'll start: Batman Returns. Visually spectacular with an amazing score, but ultimately terrible as well due to the main villain not being an actual comic book character and an overacting performance by Danny DeVito that is hard to stomach.

2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)
The film is brilliant because of the look of it ( the soundtrack was great too ) which for the time just blew everyone away. But it was terrible because it was ultimately obscure and dull or overblown and pretentious depending on how you look at it.

Bastard out of Carolina (1996)
This film is brilliant and has an outstanding performance from the then 11 year old Jena Malone as the victim of physical and sexual abuse. The film is also terrible to watch because of the subject matter.

Punch Drunk Love (2002)
The first half of the film is excruciatingly bad due in no small part to the awful "music". But then the film settles down and actually becomes quite interesting in spite of the subject matter.

The Godfather. Great movie that romanticizes organized crime.

Unforgiven

A bunch of one dimensional characters on the road to see the Wizard.

30 years ago I’d have totally agreed with you, I was not terribly impressed by Unforgiven the first time I saw it…it mostly just seemed like a good old fashioned Wild West shoot ‘em up on my first watch and those Westerns are always good fun, I love those Wild West movies.

It wasn’t until a few rewatches later that I started to appreciate the movie a great deal more and it’s central message.

William Munny was a horrible Man. He was a cruel murderer and a thief, he was a night time raider and had no care for anyone’s life and was generally a worthless, violent drunk who deserved to have been strung up from the nearest tree.

But he met a decent Lady and built a little ranch with her, attended her Church, he tried his best to provide for his family even though he was a very bad farmer.

Once his woman died he slid back into his old violent ways. A lot of people got hurt.

I’m not one to say that the women are right all the time but a decent woman can make some good sense and a decent fellow should pay some attention.

The St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959) is a interesting low budget movie with a young Steve McQueen.

I used to live about 2 blocks away from that bank. Its really cool to see Tower Grove Park back in the 50s.

Ghost (1990)

Don't get me wrong, I love this film. And so did many others, it made a lot of money, and Google will tell you that Ghost earned five nominations at the 63rd Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Film Editing, and winning Best Supporting Actress for Goldberg and Best Original Screenplay for Rubin. But it's a goofy film in many ways.
