Are there any major examples of movies or TV shows that were meant to be big comeback roles for the stars but ended up being duds or not leading to the actors/actresses becoming famous again?

shareI seem to recall when Axl Rose came on some music award show with his band with a weird look (dreadlocks and plastic surgery). It was a super awkward comeback. I don't remember exact year. Probably early 2000s.
