War Movies

I found this superb list :

(superb in the sense that it is way better than others i've found)

Interesting list, very American, almost total absence of British war films from 1940/50s which excludes many of my favourites.

reply

True. But most of the lists I have found are worse. The list does include Italian, French & Russian films.

The non-English speaking part of the list is interesting. I'd not heard of most of them and seem to have lost the habit of watching foreign language films. If nothing else it reminds me to watch my recently bought copy of Grave of the Fireflies currently languishing amongst a small mountain of yet to be watched dvds.

army of shadows, germany year zero are a couple you might have a look at. very memorable.

Here is a challenge - find a better list. I had looked at several, it was the first one I found that was decent.

I don't think 'The Young Lions' was on the list. Its more a drama set within the war, but its a fine film.

Thanks for the link. This list proves to me that there are many more war movies that I haven't watched yet.

American Sniper, The Longest Day (1962), When the Wind Blows (1986) missing from the list.

I am glad to seen Battleground (1949) and Forbidden Games (1952) in the list.

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many great war movies. I prefer movies based on actual events. I wonder if Ender's Game should make the list? It's required reading for the USA military, not sure which branches though.
