Tipping in the UK is the norm, but not as high as in the US. I always ensure I know what the tipping etiquette is wherever I am in the world.
Whenever my friends ask if I'm gonna give the waitress the tip I tell them no I'm gonna give her the whole damn thing.

Unless a server is very rude (which I have very seldom seen) I leave a tip of 20%.
If the service is really bad then I would not do it.
