Until what age should the government force kids to be at school?

It's 18 in a lot of states.

In California you can leave at 16 if you have parental consent and pass an exam to show you are competent.

Other places if you have full time employment or training elsewhere, such as wanting to do an apprenticeship, sometimes as young as 15.

I think forcing someone to go to school against their will is never good. If you're able to work at 15 and want a job, go for it.

The government shouldn't force you to be somewhere you don't want to be.

I would stay with 18 and a high school diploma. There are people who later regret dropping out of school. At the time they couldn't wait to get out, but often look back and wish they had stuck it out for just six months longer and graduated.

I know someone who went through this experience. She quit school in 12th grade. Later, after settling down and coming to her senses, she decided to attend college. No high school diploma meant having to go through the General Educational Development (GED) testing process to earn the certificate before being allowed to enroll. It was then that she wished she had just held on for the few remaining months to finish high school.

She did well, though, eventually earning a degree in nursing.

The government should not force kids to be at school at ANY age. That is a decision which should be left to the parents.
The government already exerts WAY too much control over our daily lives.

I guess home schooling is acceptable, but I don't think parents should have the decision to not educate their kids.

reply

I do. It's their child, it should be their decision. The government should keep its big fat obtrusive nose out of people's lives.

reply

It should be the parents decision to neglect their child? Are you seriously saying this??

I don't like government overreach either, but this isn't it. A child needs to be educated or they will have a horrible life with a tragic end.

reply

Yes, I'm seriously saying this. I'm a Libertarian, so I don't like the government sticking their big fat nose
into people's daily lives.

I agree, but we're not talking about peoples daily lives here. We're talking about abuse and neglect. A child has a right to an education. Either send them to school and teach them at home, but keeping them stupid is not an option.

reply

The people of stupid would take issue with that πŸ˜‰

reply

Yes we ARE talking about peoples' everyday lives, and the government has no right to stick their noses
into them

🀨

reply

Abuse and neglect isn't part of of peoples "everyday lives."

reply

Who gets to decide what is abuse and neglect? Who gets to play God?

reply

The basic parameters for abuse/neglect are pretty straight forward. If someone is going to bring a life into this world, they have to provide for their basic needs with food, shelter, clothes, education, safety, etc. No one is playing god by enforcing these necessities.

Whatever.

Even the people of stupid?

So in your view, stupid people have fewer rights than the rest of us?

🀨

reply

The people of stupid are too stupid to make decisions. Most of the elected leaders in the free world are testament to this πŸ™ƒπŸ˜œ

They should be required to graduate from 12th grade and get a diploma. If they do that before they're 18 then they can leave school. Otherwise, keep your ass in school or some equivalent training. Once they're 18, they're on their own and can do as they please.

Child labor has been a form of abuse and oppression for thousands of years. It's important that society guard against children leaving school to work.

Whatever age you pick, it will be wrong for the specific student. No one here is qualified to answer this question, though you will all have internet fun with it.

Who here has a degree in education?
