Can You Make Yourself Burp At Will?
Simple question. I can do it by swallowing air in a particular way. It's hard to describe but it's very easy to do

shareYes. You have to do this weird kind of gulping swallow at the back of your throat, capturing an air bubble to be expelled.
A kid I knew in middle school was able to fart at will, but that incredible talent has thus far eluded me.
Yes, that's a good description of how to do it
And damn, that's pretty impressive. I wonder if he gulped an air bubble with his rump?
Yes. I can burp words too.
shareMe too ... but I have been trained not to. The hostess of our weekly board-gaming group has a no-burp-talking rule. You burp talk, you either bring a cake next week or stand in the corner like a school kid in the 60s. So we guys in the group curtail our brutish habit and when in other settings (or when she leaves the room) burp words like "freedom," "talking," and "cake."
shareBurps, “Free-dom!”
shareThere are times you better, lest you cause an international incident.

No. I wasn't born with the "burp" function, "at will" or otherwise, and neither was my older brother or younger sister. We've never burped before; we don't even understand how it works. Trying to explain how burping works to us is like trying to explain color to someone who was born blind.
Instead of burping, we have an involuntary function that sort of sounds like a low and drawn out growl emanating from the throat (the closest sound I can compare it to is the sound of someone's stomach growling when they are hungry), but instead of expelling gas from the stomach it draws air in, making matters worse. It's at its worst if I go to bed / take a nap too soon after eating, in which case it will happen once every 30 seconds or so for the next ~hour or until I fall asleep. It also happens if I stay sitting in a straight-backed chair or stay standing up directly after eating. The only thing that prevents it is sitting in a chair in a semi-reclined position for an hour or so after I eat.
As far as I know, this is unique to my brother, younger sister, and me (if not unique, it's rare enough that I've never encountered it with anyone else, and no name that I know of exists for it). Our older sister has the normal burp function, and so do our parents.
Wow, that's amazing. Never heard of not being able to burp. I don't think I could describe burping anymore than I could describe an imaginary color, you're right
I guess the best way is to compare it to farting. It starts out as a feeling to expel trapped gas, and sometimes it's stronger than other times. I guess it's like the PG-13 version of a fart
