Countries You're Extra Interested In?

About their history, culture, people, whatever? (Besides your own)

I have two. Italy and Iraq. I think the former is due to the movies, humor, food. Iraq, because it was my "first war" (but not the last) and there's many Michiganders who are of Iraqi descent.

I remember when I was 10, asking and asking for a book on Saddam. I still have it. Although De Sica is my favorite director, I can't find a single interview of his in English, and although I only like 1950s Fellini, he still remained an interesting person - especially in interviews - I have a few director's books full of interviews.

I've never been there - it's still on my bucket list as is Egypt.

reply

I’ve been to Japan a couple of times and I was blown away.

Let me know if you plan to go to Egypt - I was there in December and will be happy to share tips and info.

I’ve been to Japan a couple of times and I was blown away.

Too soon.

Ironically I went to both Tokyo and Hiroshima.

Russia and Vietnam.

Russia is vast and has so much diversity of landscapes. From Lake Baikal, the mountains, farmland, etc.

Vietnam is also fascinating. Beautiful river-ways, jungles, food, culture and history.

reply

Maybe not Russia right now.

reply

No. I'll probably never go there but I'm fascinated, none the less.

Tahiti I've always wanted to stay in one of those huts on stilts, above the water.

Egypt I was pretty fascinated by it as a kid, probably why my degree is in Anthropology. I've heard some good and bad things about it.

I am fascinated by North Korea. Virtually any other place in the world you can at least do the armchair tourist thing in front of your computer; but every scrap of info you can scare up about North Korea might as well be arcane.

this would be in my Top 5.... That mystery makes me curious. I always think both sides are lying.

I have been fascinated by Tibet since I was a child. The Buddhist Lama religion produced exquisite art and a wondrous mythology. And the isolation of the Himalayas has created such a unique culture.

reply

Do you know much about their music? I'd love to go back to the earliest recordings on YouTube.

reply

Some of the New Age music touted as "Tibetan" is not authentic.

This is real Tibetan music:
