Dang, a lot of my favorite music comes from people not bands, but this will make more thought go in to this:
The Kinks
The Band
The Mother Hips
Ween
The Fiery Furnaces
Grateful Dead
Faces
Talking Heads
Blackalicious
Deerhoof
Minutemen
Fairport Convention
The Books
Novos Baianos
The Jackson 5
3 Mustaphas 3
Jurassic 5
The Drones
The Flying Burrito Brothers
Paristetris
Not necessarily in that order.
I included single artists in my list as well. They usually have set a back-up band anyway.
I'd say The Kinks are one of the most important rock bands ever.
The Kinks were always on my radar though a bit before my time, but it wasn't until after my "phases" of musical taste had passed and I finally accepted every genre had great and mediocre music that I fell in love with them. And you have no idea how hard it was for me to not include some of my GoATs: Zappa, Mingus, Stevie Wonder, Sufjan, MJ and of course Bowie. Music is a big source of joy for me, but Blackstar is still devastating if I pay too much attention to it.
shareAs a diehard Bowie fan I did not like Blackstar. I respect it as his final statement. But he sounds old and ill. Yes, it's devastating and it made me incredibly sad.
I believe Bowie's last great album was Scary Monsters in 1980. After that he began pandering to American Top 40, beginning with Let's Dance in 1983.
Same here on both points. Not to draw any literal parallels, but I admire Blackstar as a work of art kind of like I view Come and See or Snowtown as exceptional genre films that I have to be in a specific mood for and do not necessarily "enjoy" though they all affect me in a profound way. Well, that may be a little extreme a comparison, but I'll leave it and trust my point will get across... :)

Was *this* close to listing The Pretenders. I'd put their first three albums up against any other artists' consecutive three albums in terms of sheer consistency. And Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! is a desert island album for me, but lists can only be so long tho...
shareThe first Pretenders album is perfect, one of the best albums ever IMHO.
"Duty Now for the Future" and "Freedom of Choice" are my favorite Devo albums. However I will say "Mongoloid" on "Q" is probably Devo's best single song.
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band
The Band
The Beatles
Bob Marley & The Wailers
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band
Buffalo Springfield
The Byrds
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Jethro Tull
The National
Ramones
The Replacements
The Rolling Stones
Scars on 45
Steely Dan
Traffic
U2
The Wallflowers
Plus these "singer/songwriters" who I haven't listed since you can't really call them a band ...
Van Morrison
Jackson Browne
Linda Ronstadt
Patti Smith
Tom Waits
Time to play armchair psychic: you are a musician, yes?
shareOnly when I play "air guitar," otherwise, no.
shareWell, call me The Amazing Randini for disproving psychics. The reason I asked is you had a bunch of bands that are referred to as "musicians' bands" among musicians. AKA critics' favorites i.e. The Band, CCR, The Replacements, Van, et. al.
Consider picking an instrument up some day. Helps keep the brain sharp, and a stranger on the internet said so. :)
To not let it get too out of hand I'll limit it to the original quantity; 12.
Tangerine Dream

Good thread, the MC peeps have good taste in music!
I’d add Bob Marley And The Wailers and a big shout out to Iron Maiden as well.
