Was there ever a financially very successful movie that didn't have a sequel?

I can think of Forrest Gump, American Beauty

Titanic?

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). Stephen Spielberg had originally considered doing a sequel, but ultimately decided against it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial#Sequels

reply

The writer of ET wrote a novel that continues the story. For some reason the studio passed on that story.

The Departed (2006)

Most of them. Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind, Forbidden Planet ... most great movies never needed sequels.

Only incomplete bad scripts require a sequel. That is unless the studios are gonna milk some superhero for all he's worth.

reply

I have to disagree.

The Star Wars OT had to be done and so did The Lord Of The Rings.
Most of the DC and Marvel movies were met with enormous box office success because millions of people love the continuing story of these fun characters. Netflix spent a ton producing Superhero stuff on good to great series to satisfy audience demand.

The first three Friday The 13th movies are very excellent horror films and who didn’t like seeing Dirty Harry turning up on the case to figure out what hoodlum needed to get blown away to close the case over and over again?

Sequels continue the story and if it’s a great story tickets get sold.

The Rolling Stones still tour, they are ancient guys but they still sell out stadiums.

YOU HAVE MUCH TO LEARN YET,YOUNG ONE.

reply

I was about to say-- a lot of the old high grossers did not have sequels. Sequels were more of a rarity for A-pictures long ago.

reply

There was actually a Gone with the Wind sequel called Scarlett released in 1994.

It took 'em 60 years? Hollywood used to have restraint. Now they cash in the following year. Lol.

reply

Avatar sequel has restraint.

reply

But the first movie was shit anyway.

reply

It's a diamond-encrusted shit made of gold tho'.

reply

Are we talking about Amber Heard now?

reply

District 9 (2009). There was talk of a sequel a few years ago but nothing happened.

reply

I heard recently that Neil Blomkamp was actively working on District 10. But then at the same time I hear he's working on an Alien movie as well as a Starship Troopers reboot.

reply

I didn't know that about District 10. Hopefully it will be made.

Ghost (1990)

Se7en
True Lies
The Goonies
The Fifth Element
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (A Disney movie without a sequel???)

reply

I'd like to see another movie similar to Roger Rabbit. That was a fun movie. A really old school take on Bugs and Daffy could be interesting.

reply

THE NEW CHIP N DALE RESCUE RANGERS MOVIE...VERY SIMILAR VIBE AND WAY BETTER THAN IT HAD ANY BUSNIESS BEING.

reply

Several people on here have mentioned that movie. I would never have checked it out, but I'll give it a go.

reply

There have been rumors of a Roger Rabbit sequel circulating for years.

reply

True Lies was a lot of fun. Now everyone seems to old to do a proper sequel.
Goonies 2 should have been made years ago but still possible.
Se7en? I liked the movie but didn't seem like it needed a sequel.

reply

I don't really think that any of these movies need a sequel. They told a good story and then finished it.

reply

You're right. Not every film needs a sequel. I think that it is surprising that sequels were not made out these successful movies because studios do love money.

reply

It's nice to remember a time most movies were not franchises. I mean I know there are still stand alone movies these days, but they are so few and far between.

reply

And some creative people should not take the money to do lackluster to awful sequels.

Joker (2019)
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Interstellar (2014)
Gravity (2013)
2012 (2009)
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
The Sixth Sense (1999)

reply

Joker apparently is getting a sequel
Bohemian Rhapsody could continue telling the story until Freddie died
Sixth Sense probably didn't happen already because the director said he didn't like doing sequels
The other ones unnecessary

reply

Passion of the Christ is apparently getting a sequel too. This one will focus on the resurrection of Jesus.
