What was the movie that made you love movies?
Ben Hur 1959
shareI didn't see many movies when I was a kid (i.e., when my age was in the single digits) because I never got to go to a theater and we didn't have a TV. In 1983, when I was 8, some new neighbors moved in next door and they had HBO. The movies that were in heavy rotation on HBO at the time were Rocky III, Superman II, and Grease 2, and I watched all of them quite a few times each. I loved Rocky III and Superman II. I didn't care much for Grease 2, aside from the motorcycle jump scene. So if I had to choose just one movie that "made me love movies," I guess it would be Rocky III.
We got a TV in '84 when Dad finally overruled Mom's objections to having one, but we didn't have cable, so we only got the three major networks plus PBS. However, it was just in time to watch CBS's February 26, 1984 broadcast of Star Wars, which was a 3-hour event that included a half-hour "the making of Star Wars" documentary. It was the first time Star Wars had been broadcast on network TV, and the first time I'd seen it as well. That was a big event for me because the Star Wars movies had been huge for as long as I could remember, and all my friends had seen them and had the toys, posters, and such, and before that night in '84, I had no way of seeing a Star Wars movie.
In '88 we got a VCR and watching movies at home soon became much less of an event, but since you had to go to an actual store to rent a movie, it was still much more of an event than it is today.
The Sound of Music
I remember riding my bike at dusk when the kid up the road tells us The Sound of Music was coming on tv. We all pedaled so fast to get home and switch on tv.
