People you know with interesting jobs

A friend of mine from my university days is a financial crimes investigator with the RCMP. He has spent his whole career chasing money and assets of terrorists, drug dealers, organized crime and biker gangs. You can add truckers to that list.

reply

Someone I used to know is in the government (probably not for long, though). The only interesting part is how a coalition that lost the election is still able to rule the country.

reply

a member of parliament?

reply

I've already said too much.😬

reply

as if i am going to know. 😊

reply

Our prime minister is very close with yours. They even went on a date!:

reply

you know the prime minister?

reply

Of course.

reply

My son traveled to Canada about three years ago to meet with one of the PM's advisors - at the PM's request.

A high school classmate of mine is a TV and film director.

reply

Everyone knows your prime minister. He's pretty popular among young people.

reply

this is sort of one degree of separation, but i used to work with the brother of stephen harper. we weren't pals or anything, didn't even work in the same office, but he knew my name and occasionally had to acknowledge my existence by phone or email, so that's kinda like me having an in with the canadian prime minister. kinda.

reply

was he a brainiac type person like his brother?

reply

he was very much like him in both intellect and personality imo. a bit uptight, occasionally a bit prickly, very very smart and fastidious.

very bright and professional, not particularly easy-going personality-wise.

reply

that sounds exactly like harper. 😊

reply

Are you from the Netherlands?

reply

Yes.

reply

Cool, my MINI was built in the Netherlands

reply

I'm stupid, do you mean the car???

reply

I do

reply

Wait a minute, the pride and joy of the British automotive industry is produced on the continent???

reply

The MINI Countryman variant is, the regular hatchback is built in Oxford.

reply

MINI is owned by BMW since 1996.

reply

Don’t lie, it’s The NetherHollandDutchlandlands.

reply

AKA Denmark.

reply

I knew a guy who was the workplace spook, as in clandestine electronic surveillance. I suppose you might call that an interesting job, if you like being a sneaking spy for Big Brother.

reply

The Stinkmati?

reply

Hit another nerve did I ?

reply

not really.

I have a friend who works as a tour guide in the DPRK (north Korea). Well, obviously not at this moment, because the Korean government has suspended tourism from abroad due to the pandemic, but he'll be going back when the suspension ends. He's still officially employed in that job anyway, but in the meantime he's doing other work for the tour agency.

He's actually offered to help me get the same job, when it becomes available again. I might do it.

reply

what is there to see in north korea?

reply

A lot of the same kind of stuff there is to see in most countries, plus a number of things unique to the DPRK. Museums of various kinds, musical and other kinds of artistic performances, amusement parks, monuments, festivals. There's a lot of gorgeous natural scenery. At certain times of the year there's big public events like the parades in Pyongyang and the Mass Games. In the summer there's beaches, in the winter there's skiing. Boat rides on the Taedong River are popular. The Munsu water park is very popular in summer. Foreigners can participate in the yearly Pyongyang Marathon if they want to. The Pyongyang Metro is considered a must-see, not just as a way of getting around Pyongyang but as an experience in itself. There's visiting the DMZ from the northern side. Mount Paekdu is beautiful and one of the main tourist destinations. Mount Myohyang too is a popular tourist destination, it's a nature preserve and you can go hiking around there and see the wildlife. There are a lot of historical sites around the country, like also at Mount Myohyang there's a famous medieval Buddhist temple. This is all off the top of my head but there's plenty of other stuff. Contrary to popular myth, you can go pretty much anywhere in the country and take pictures of most anything except military facilities. The tours are all guided but the Koreans are pretty accommodating.

reply

... and if you look over on the right side of the bus there's mass starvation and rampant human rights violations.

reply

The same as in the streets of NY. They just don't bother to cover it.

reply

Communism at its finest...

reply

i would rather visit south korea.

reply

And go to a K-pop concert together with me!😊

reply

you think north korea knows anything about k-pop.

reply

The mystique and novelty, I'd assume. I've heard to these tour groups and can see the attraction, but I'd sure as hell still never visit that country, especially after what happened to Otto Warmbier.

reply

did you move to north korea?

reply

Nah. My life has just been going badly lately and I haven't felt up to posting. Hopefully things will change soon.

reply

A couple of people who have high security clearance jobs so not sure what they do but it must be cool.

An actor who has had a couple of hit tv shows. Don’t know this person well, just through a friend.

An artist who actually makes a good living from their work.

reply

A guy who cleans up bio-hazard scenes like gory murder scenes etc.
A guy in the NSA.
A handful of B to D list actors (from acquaintance to welcome in their home).
Several rock and Big Band musicians of some note.
A few state governors.
An officer in the LAPD (was best friend in high school)
The ancient books curator at the Getty museum.

reply

give me some names.

reply

I thought better of including names. I'd give ya the names of the ones that are mere acquaintances (majority of the actors and musicians) but it still feels weird name dropping.

reply

Practicing analysis and strokes.

reply

One of my classmate in highschool was an actor in a (uh, let's say questionable-quality) indie film.

Nothing particularly interesting, but a sizeable percentage of my highschool friends ended up as goverment officials of some sort, including police, highway mantainance officer, embassy staff, in some ministries, etc. Even when they went to different colleges. I was like, why am I not one?

One I find interesting is a friend that immidiately after he graduated from our college, in software programming (the same as me,) for some reasons decided that he wanted to be a pilot instead. So he went to pilot school and now he's a pilot flying commercial passenger flights. With a computer science degree lol.
