Has Anyone Seen A Chinese Movie Older Than 40 Years?

I have not, but would like to. I know they didn't have much of an industry, but I'm sure someone here has seen a few great ones.

I love checking out movies from other countries to see what's important to the directors/producers/etc., but also how they evolve over the years, and I love to start at the beginning of "talkies" (1930s - non-silent movies) and work my way to the present day. When I see a great movie, I'll look up the director and attempt to see all their movies starting from the beginning.

I think the only one I've seen is The Goddess (1934), which was very good.

Yes. 40 years only takes us back as far as 1982 so years and years of early Jackie Chan films are older than that. 😀

Jackie Chan's flicks in the 80s are Hong Kong movies, not Chinese.

Todays Jackie Chan's movies are Chinese movies.

Anything made between 1949 and 1980 would most likely be a propaganda film or a documentary about the revolution. Nothing that would be of any interest to anyone outside of the People's Republic.

maybe, but that would be interesting to see... kinda like exploitation movies in the US (anti-communism) or Germans in the 30s..

Yes, the first 3 Bruce Lee movies, and the entire Kung Fu movie boom of the 70s that followed happened more than 40 years ago. It was one of my favorite genres growing up.

i believe the only older chinese film i've seen is spring in a small town (1948). i don't remember much about it, but i recall thinking it was a fairly standard melodrama. nothing really memorable about it, other than where it was made and when.

There are some pretty good ones. Some that I like are "Shang Gan Ling" from I think 1956, "The Red Detachment of Women" from I think 1961, and "The East is Red" from 1965.
