Anyone else experience empty store shelves at the grocery store?

I'm in a suburban area of the US east coast so I wanted to see if anyone else noticed empty store shelves at their grocery store. There have been a couple of snow storms in my area so panic buying probably contributed to some of the problems.

I went to my neighborhood grocery store the other day and there weren't any tomatoes or lemons. I grabbed the last carton of eggs. There were a couple of other cartons of eggs that were partially full.

I buy a lot of whiskey and I noticed that my 1.75L bottles are out of stock. I have to drive 20+ miles to get my usual 1.75L bottles of Glenmorangie/Glenlivet/Glenfiddich.

A couple of the other stores in the area were having issues with produce so I suspect it's a problem with produce brokers and their distribution networks. I've noticed that a lot of industries in the US require a broker (middle-man) and it can cause problems. A lot of it relates to a shortage of truckers and workers partly due to covid restrictions/mandates.

Not by me. Everything looks normal.

I think the news causes a lot of panic buying with their end of the world weather broadcasts. They must be in cahoots with food store chains.

reply

You mean the world isn't going to end tonight?

reply

It never does. Weather forecasters need to get a grip.

They must be in cahoots with food store chains.

And, all this time, I thought the news media was in cahoots with the Dems.
Silly me! 😏

reply

Nah! You fell for a decades-old marketing campaign targeting right-wingers to turn against popular news on CBS, NBC and ABC to popularize shows on Fox. Plenty of neutral and right-wing news have always existed.

Not due to weather at the present time (Reno, NV)

I haven't noticed any empty shelves due to supply chain issues; maybe a problem with a stray product here and there, for example, of all things there was a Toblerone candy shortage for a couple of months, maybe longer. (I'm not joking.)

Edit: Restaurant menu prices have certainly risen.

They keep saying there's a shortage of truckers. Either pay them more or eliminate brokers.

reply

Gas prices had a big impact on trucker shortage. Too bad we aren't self sufficient oil-wise. If only there was some way for us to not be dependent on our enemies for oil ... I feel like history might have a lesson for us on this.

reply

Our own oil companies are the enemy. Those mother fudgers raise the gas prices for any little thing. The CEO went on vacation, they had to randomly shut down 5 refineries for no reason, it was cold, it was hot, blah blah blah.

reply

For every dollar we spend on gas, do you know how many cents go to the oil company? It varies from place to place but more than 60% goes to the govt. In some places, as much as 85% of the cost of gas is directly related to govt taxes on gas in the form of various "for the environment" or "for the children" bills. And yet Big Oil is still the bad guy.

reply

And? My point is still valid and they still rake in billions of dollars.

reply

Your government is making twice what the gas company is making off every dollar. And yet you don't even think of holding them in some murky regard. Nope. It is all the rich oil guys. What about Big Food and their profits? What about other super successful companies like Amazon? You've been bamboozled by class warfare. Given how you won't look at the biggest offender (govt) behind the curtain, I wonder who taught you thus.

reply

Only the walmarts. Normal stores seem to be doing fine.

reply

dude I'll drive a semi truck but somone has to buy me a car first so I can practice to drive a regular car again.

reply

No.

I've experienced higher prices though!

reply

Just some things here and there. Been surprisingly difficult to find frozen broccoli as of late.

I went to the grocery this morning and apparently everyone hit the store before the games yesterday and in anticipation of some snow. Just a few flakes have to fall and people prepare for blizzard. There was a run on milk - it was low, so I grabbed a gallon - most other things looked pretty normal but you could tell it was busy yesterday.
