what insect freaks you out?
beetles.
shareSeriously? NO ONE has mentioned centipedes?
I’ve never seen one irl and I hope it stays that way, they freak me out!!
I am more surprised nobody has mentioned cockroaches. I've lived in apartments my whole adult life and no matter how clean I try to be they always are a problem. Frankly I can't say I have ever seen a centipede but I am not that freaked out by them.
shareI used to get freaked out by cockroaches but no longer. Hate 'em still but they don't hit me with a strong reaction. Now when I see one I immediately try to kill it with my bare hands. Got over the freak out in late teens.
... which reminds me of a story. A friend of mine lived at his grandma's house (Granny was surly but secretly loved the traffic of young people). One evening we were partying there in a large side room with lots of space in the middle. Across the middle of the floor there raced a lone cockroach. As though prompted by invisible forces, several of us began playing roach ball. The legs of a coffee table at room's edge served as one goal and an archway the other. We ran around swatting the critter toward our goals, diving and rolling in mock sports feats as it struggled to scrabble towards whatever evil it was up to. That first one lived to teach its children how to fight us after it disappeared behind the coffee table. As though the gods were the authors of the event, another roach entered the arena right away and sped to the center. We played with it until it stopped working. We had a blast. The girls present were doing a lot of OMG'ing from a safe distance.
I told Granny all about it the next day since I was in the habit of visiting her during lunch break during school for a semester (closest friends on a different lunch schedule). She went on cussing about us good for nothing kids, trying to maintain her angry lean but was laughing while saying such. Granny exposed me to soap operas during this brief time. I miss her.
Oh yeah ... the topic.
I'm only freaked out by insects that gestate in living flesh.
I remember I had a very nice and pleasant dream that suddenness become a nightmare with some freak half man-half creature without a face attack me, It is felt real, like he really attack me. When I woke up in panic, I found a big ugly cockroach on my face, second before it go into my mouth, I throw it into the air. Believe me, not matter how brave you are, you don't want a cockroach land on you when you dreaming.
shareLOL.
I don't want cockroaches on me at any time ... especially the big ones. I rented an apartment once I think the adjacent apartment got roaches and they got into my place - in the kitchen. It freaked me out. I tossed everything in the kitchen and any food stuff, and then sprayed all the surfaces with RAID. I'd think that I got rid of them and then I would see little antenna's poking out from various places, and I would get up and chase them down. My eyesight got super-sensitive to the movement of anything that looked like antennas. I got rid of them pretty quick though.
Had a spider crawl across my face at night once. Woke me right up. Funny how a spider seems so big when it is on the wall with its legs spread out ... but when you kill them you realize how small they are.
what a nightmare.
shareMaggots and termite larvae.
shareInsects don't really bother me or creep me out but potato bugs could definitely freak and creep out people!

Why beetles?
Very few of them are harmful or toxic, but I guess there are a few like stinkbugs. You gotta respect those giant beetles, like the goliath beetles. They would make cool pets.
I like beetles. They are kind of cute, especially dung beetles - how they roll their little dried up balls of dung around. We have some beetles in the marshlands around Silicon Valley that are fun to watch. If something disturbs them to stand on their heads sticking their abdomen up in the air, and then they get on with whatever they were doing.
Spiders are not insects, but there is something about spiders that really freaks me out, and my freak out gets exponentially worse the bigger they are. I don't think I could live in the parts of Australia where they have those huge spiders.
Oh, oh, oh ... those giant hornets, the Chinese murder hornets freak me out. There are videos of people going in an taking out huge nests of them, and the sound and visuals just make my skin crawl.
Stink bugs.
