do @$$holes know they are being @$$holes?

when people are just the worst, do you think they know they are being an @$$hole, or maybe they are so enraged causing their reaction, they are merely reacting in a defensive way that overrides their logic of handling the situation better?

simplest example is in traffic: not one day goes by I don't witness someone rudely cutting someone off or similar. recently, in medium rushhour traffic, I had my cruise control on, flowing with traffic, with sadly only about 2 car lengths space between me and the guy in front of me... BARELY enough room for a vehicle to fit in there, and obviously no safety if that happen....
a gal in right lane, thinks the car infront is not going fast enough for her, and she darts into the open spot. I just shook my head at her, and so she starts with the breaks, and I slow up also. I was never blocking her, or slowing her down in any way. she break checked again, I just smiled and shook my head....

so, people that do this... do they know in their mind they are @$$holes, or is their defensive lifestyle such that they think all is fair pushing others around?

personally, I know if I am an @$$hole and strive to not be one all the time. I gladly let people in front of me, and signal always etc, respecting others on the road and in life. I literally drive to keep everyone around me happy, not in it for me. Just want to get there safe, with no tickets.

People tend to judge others by their actions and themselves by their motivations. People are very good at rationalising their own behaviour - so even if they know they've done something wrong, they will justify it to themselves post hoc. We are the centre of our universes and the heroes of our own mental narratives.

Some folk are more self-aware than others though - but often assholes are unaware they're being assholes or are capable of pushing the thought away because the human ego resists thinking badly of itself.

shame the world has to be this way.

I mean in a traffic situation, if I was not paying attention (never happens) and cut someone off, I would make sure they saw hands up, mouthing "SORRY SORRY", but that's me.

maybe if more people would shout at them, "@$$HOLE!" they would, over time, start to understand the pattern? yeah, probably not.

we should go back to having punching people be legal. :D
yeah, I'm kidding, can you imagine? ....yet, still.....
