Getting A Seat At A Nice Restaurant

I've read a lot of biographies of celebrities, and this seems to be the one thing they all loved about being famous.

Ha! Weird...
You'd think the mansion, the sports car and all the sexy Ladies would be higher up on the list than where they get to sit while they eat spaghetti

reply

I wonder if it's because the restaurants they go to are "exclusive" and a place to compare clothes.. A status thing. Whoever is at a restaurant that Sinatra is at must be important. I think they probably like observing other celebrities, too. And I guess we all like good food, but I prefer people bringing me leftovers. I don't like the idea of someone serving me, anyway.

reply

I've been to a couple of very 'exclusive' joints over the years and felt completely out of place

If I were rich and famous I'd still rather go to the diner and get a Reuben with fries and tip the cute waitress heavily

reply

They are rarer now, but I could never imagine enjoying myself at a place that requires jacket and tie. I don't want to eat with a buttoned collar around my neck, and I'd be overly afraid of spilling something on myself. I almost only spill something on myself when I'm wearing something nice.

reply

You and I both suffer from acute Spazz-itus, I never wear white shirts because of this horrid condition

reply

Any white shirt Ive ever owned usually only gets about once before becoming covered in stains. I never buy white shirts.

reply

I like to go to a jacket and tie place every so often, but it has to have the food to go with it. I mean I don't live anywhere that has the exclusive places like that, so it's not really the same thing. I will book a place months in advance though if it has food that I want to try.

I've been to very few of those, and I'm sure there are many with great cuisine. But in my experience the food has never been worth it. It's like they're trying to distract the diners from the mediocrity by making them dress up.

Excellent point. And now with COVID, if I ever treat myself, it's with some Q-doba delivered to my porch... contact-free

I know I've seen Columbo way too many times; I immediately recognized the episode.

One of my favorites!

Vito Scotti!

Falk and Scotti were friends and Scotti appeared several episodes.

He was a wonderful character actor.

I went to Catholic school in Key West, FL in the 70s. Sometime when I was in 7th or 8th grade (1977,1978) Vito Scotti came to our school and did his standup routine. I didn’t really know who he was at the time. Some of his jokes bordered on bathroom humor and so the nuns weren’t very happy about it. Anyway he was telling us all the shows he had been in and when he mentioned Gilligan’s Island we all cheered!

Amazing character actor.

Great Columbo episode.

I can't find the clip, but I remember a story told by Wayne Knight (Newman on Seinfeld) about waiting for a table at a packed Las Vegas restaurant. The hostess, and other staff during the wait, told him how much they loved Newman. He remembers thinking, "If you love me so much, GET ME A TABLE!"

They also were allowed to skip the lines at both restaurants and nightclubs.

The thing they love the most is looking down their noses at us peons, the assholes!

Lauren Bacall seemed to like all the free swag celebrities get.
