Creepy Songs

(excluding songs by Throbbing Gristle, I'm not sure if that stuff can even be called music)

"Don't Fear the Reaper" is creepy to me. I suppose the subject of the song adds to the creepiness.

"Stairway to Heaven" the weepy quality of Plant's voice at the beginning makes it creepy to me.

Can't think of any others right now.

Tubular bells, used briefly in the Exorcist soundtrack, always gave me goosebumps. It wasn't originally written for the soundtrack, so I think it can count as a song. It's an instrumental though. so maybe not.

Yes, definitely. I forgot that one.

Tubular Bells is a great choice!

Three that spring to mind right this moment are John Wayne Gacy Jr. by Surfjan Stevens, Fotheringay by Fairport Convention and Lullaby by The Cure. Three creepy but effective songs for different reasons. They tell a story really well I think.

I love how much variety there is in Robert Plant’s voice. His harmonising with Sandy Denny in The Battle of Evermore is beautiful yet eerie.

Battle of Evermore is a good pick. It's not an obvious one, but that part of the song you mentioned does have an eerie quality.

reply

Agreed! I’m not sure what it is. Whether it’s the imagery it evokes, Plant/Denny’s ghostly wailing or the knowledge of Sandy Denny’s untimely death that gives it an ‘atmosphere’ but I do find it to be quite a haunting song.

A lot of people understand (I think) that Every Breath You Take by the Police is delivered by someone who is announcing his obsession and need to control the person he is fascinated with. Not romantic at all, but it's got that pulsing beat insistently pulling you in. A very unusual pop song while not being all that unusual a circumstance.

Don't know if this is more weird than creepy:

The Legend of the Wooley Swamp still gives me shivers when I listen to it late at night by a camp fire.

"Luka" by Suzanne Vega: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZt7J0iaUD0

The creepy part for me is the contrast between the happy sounding, major key music and the topic.

I’m imagining a scenario where someone has been listening to this song for years as background music and then one day they actually properly listen to the lyrics and ‘boom.’ Very effective song.

> Very effective song.

It is. Hard to believe that was 34 years ago.

"Tiptoe Through the Tulips" by Tiny Tim. The lyrics themselves are not disconcerting, but the way the song is sung/played is eerie.
