I just watched a story about the missing autistic boy in Australia that was found in bushland. They translated that to “he was found in the wilderness”.
Sounds so funny.
Yeah you could call it the wilderness, or the forrest, or you could just accept that there’s a specific word for Australia’s undeveloped and vegetated land. Don’t be afraid to use new words.

shareAbsolutely. Plus a google search is at everyone’s fingertips. I learnt the term archipelago watching a documentary on fishing and googled it to make sure it was what I thought it meant (a chain of islands.)
shareAgreed. We've all heard the Australian term "The Bush", that makes it easy!
We use the catchall term "wilderness" for all wild places, but have more specific terms like "the deep woods" or "above the timberline" or "the scrub" or "that desert will fucking kill you" to describe specific environments.
