Not saying that this is the way it should be but I was just wondering, given all the arguments we come across on subjects of equality, it seems as if the word means different things to different people. And everyone understands it differently as well too.
But what do you think about this and how do we change it, thanks.
equality doesn't exist, it any shape. the left talk about equality of opportunity, but what good is it if the outcome doesn't improve anything? i mean you can give a scholarship to harvard to someone, but if they don't have the capacity, if they aren't really smart enough, then what?
We aren't equal, there are people who can work hard and train at something and never will be as good as someone is naturally, we have different talents, different strengths that make us unequal.
the problem with todays society is that some people want to change the outcome of our society, the natural results of our society, and when you give that much power to the state, it never ends well.
The left has stopped talking about equality of opportunity and has started talking about "equity", because they've noticed that people who are born disadvantaged are staying disadvantage, in spite of efforts made to provide equality of opportunity. It hasn't worked, so there's a desire for a new approach.
Somehow, we've lost social mobility... or at least, we've lost upward social mobility.
they are staying disadvantaged because we live in a society were we punish people who work and reward people who do nothing. killing you with taxes in order to give me a welfare cheque, wont help either of us in the long run.
No, people stay disadvantaged because wealth is going into the hands of the richest rich, which means there's that much less money and material goods available to anyone else. Downward social mobility has become far more common than upward as wages fall and housing costs rise, and people like you are making the mistake of trying to fight other people who don't have enough for what little is available to ordinary people... don't look around you at the other people who want a decent standard of living, look above you at the assholes who've taken all the wealth for themselves and left the rest of us nothing.
If you want more money for yourself, demand that the rich pay their fucking taxes, because believe me paying Jeff Bezos's share of taxes as well as your own is taking a hell of a lot more money out of your pocket than the social programs that provide the poor with a little something to eat and a school for their kids.
It's also the RICH who created the MYTH that people who don't have enough to live on are the Free Loaders when it's the RICH who do most of the FREE LOADING (by hiding their MONEY in Swiss Bank accounts and in other places like the CAYMAN ISLANDS so they don't have to pay TAXES on it).
When you PAY TAXES for them to BUILD the ROADS and BRIDGES and AIRPORTS that BEZOS takes advantage of -- by having his EMPLOYEES use them to distribute what he sells you -- (that also leads to the need to REPLACE them faster than if they weren't being used by BEZOS) -- then you most definitely are THE LOSER.
Because when BEZOS doesn't any PAY TAXES, that means YOUR TAX DOLLARS become HAND OUTS for BEZOS, who will keep using those ROADS and BRIDGES and AIRPORTS and other INFRASTRUCTURES that YOUR MONEY pays for to build and replace.
In other words, you become a SUCKER for the FREELOADING BEZOS to whom you are GIVING HAND OUTS.
Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows
Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long-stem rose
Everybody knows
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old Black Joe's still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows
And everybody knows that the Plague is coming
Everybody knows that it's moving fast ...
Having Bezos pay his fair share of taxes isn't a handout, it's just Bezos doing his duty as a citizen.
All his low-paid employees do their duty and pay their taxes, not because they want to but because they don't have a choice, while the Bezoses of the world have co-opted politicians to make it legal for them to get out of paying... and buying up media outlets to tell the world that it's right and just that working people should pay taxes and billionaires shouldn't. And some fools [pointed look] have started to believe them! AHAHAHAHAAAA!!!
Equality of opertunity means exactly that. If you're born in to the right family, go to the right school with better teachers and form the right social networks you have a huge advantage - which you then hand on to your children. It's also about attitude - you're basically taught to expect to be successful.
You're quite right, we're all different in terms of intelligence and abilities but a successful life (whatever that actually means) is much more achievable if you're already several steps up the ladder.

Europeans came from countries where royalty and nobility were considered to be born superior to commoners. Commoners suffered and starved while those "born superior" lived a great life. The elite oppressed the People by taking more and more.
The concept of no one being born superior was radical! Europeans like Ben Franklin were impressed with the concepts of equality and democracy practiced in The Iroquois Confederacy which influenced the Constitution. It took centuries for it to become more inclusive and we're still not completely there because bigots want to hold onto the idea that they are born superior.
There are certain people who would rather destroy democracy rather than let go of their bigotry!
Change comes when the People stop allowing themselves to be manipulated and divided by the rich who use their media and purchased politicians to get 99% of the population to fight among themselves like fools.
Meanwhile, the elite oppress the People by taking more and more.
>>The spiky six-part HBO mini-series by Mike White captures the self-delusion and defensiveness of the wealthy white one-percenters in the US
They vacation at this LUXURY HOTEL in HAWAII where they proceed to ABUSE the staff with their PETTY promises and other DEMANDS, until the MANAGER and one of the employees also fights back again against them.
And in the PREVIEW clip for tonight's SEASON FINALE it also looks like there's going to be some kind of an INSURRECTION against them !!!
The show also starts at 8pm or in less than 6 more HOURS from now.
I don't have HBO. They usually release shows on DVD.
"Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America: A Recent History" by Kurt Anderson is about how the rich started fighting back against the New Deal policies which had helped most Americans. Another good book is "Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing America's Heartland" by Jonathan Metzl, a medical doctor.
Sorry to hear you don't have HBO. It's a story about RICH WHITE FOLKS who go to a LUXURY HOTEL in HAWAII where they PESTER the staff with their DEMANDS, and make FAKE PROMISES to them (about FUNDING a business for them -- which it's highly unlikely they have any intention of doing -- and probably only said that as a way to BUMP the other GUEST out of their way -- so that they could get to the front of the line and have their appointments).
It's definitely an amusing look at that 1% who the HOTEL MGR also describes as being like a BUNCH of BABIES, who cry out wanting to have the most ATTENTION paid to them by the STAFF.
I understand all too well the reasons why you feel that way, and SALUTE you for your resourcefulness and for your ability to find another way to watch the show.
Streaming is still paying HBO. I'll pay amazon video only if there's no DVD and it's a small independent filmmaker. I don't mind throwing a few bucks their way. Otherwise, I wait for a DVD library release.
