OK I’ll pick two of yours that I don’t know of and look into them if you take two of mine.

Deal?

Which of yours do you think a young man like me could like?

I think an old man like you (who probably doesn’t like rap) might enjoy

Stabilo, Cage the elephant or Placebo

Idk…

reply

i'm so old and very tired! but i actually have a bit of tolerance for some rap. de la soul, early pe, outcast. it's certainly not my preferred style, but...i have room in my life for a bit of it.

hmmm....
i think i'll choose:

belle and sebastian (i'm not sure how much tolerance you have for twee scottish people, but if you have even a little, maybe you'll dig these songs...)

judy and the dream of horses:

the boy with the arab strap:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HdAplWpqWA&ab_channel=ClaphamJunction

the delgados - also scottish! not intentional. i don't have a fetish for the scottish. but i do love both of those bands.

everything goes around the water:

i know placebo a little bit - their first album made a pretty big splash as i recall, but don't know those other bands at all.

throw a few links to a few tracks you really like & i'll be sure to check them out this evening or tomorrow morning.

I’m dowwwn!

Okay, let’s do this in two parts. I checked your first band:

Belle and Sebastien:

Judy and the dream of horses: I actually prefer a clean and stripped down song like this over one that is overcharged with instruments (and noises). When the trumpet kicked in it put a smile on my face. I don’t mind the singer but I didn’t really get the lyrics. 7/10

When the song ended another one started call The stars of track and field and I had to let it play, it was even better. 8/10

Arab strap: now this band is starting to make me feel like it was inspired by Queen, Cat Stevens, Billy Joel, Bob Dylan and whoever is the reference for cheerful trumpets. All greats in my book btw. This one is good too AND I really liked the lyrics. 7.5/10

I’ll start with Cage the elephant:

My favorite from them but I prefer melancholy music over uplifting music so be warn. Right before my eyes (live):

Cold cold cold (1minute intro but you love shorts so you should enjoy)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n95eekfFZZg

Come a little closer (one of the best videoclip ever)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KVYup3Qwh8Q

Shake me down (The song that made me fall in love with this band):

If you wanna pursue your quest with cage the elephant these are honourable mentions:

back against the wall
ain’t no rest for the wicked
In one ear
cigarette daydreams

reply

i will definitely give these a listen, but likely not until tomorrow morning.

thanks!

& thanks for checking out the b&s tracks.
i love the lyrics to ...arab strap,

we all know you're soft cuz we've all see you dancing
we all know you're hard cuz we all saw you drinking from noon until noon again
you're the boy with the filthy laugh
you're the boy with the arab strap

i don't know why, i just love those words!

reply

Oh I feel you. Loved that part too. And let’s not forget :” You're constantly updating your hit parade of your ten biggest wanks”

reply

right before my eyes - went in completely blind, knowing nothing about this band, their sound, whatever. instantly dug it. hit me right in my mopey sweet spot. very melancholic as you said. nice, winding melody. absolutely great. that's a 5/5 song in my books

cold cold cold - reminds me a lot of the pretty things or love or something from the 60s psych-pop era. also great! cool guitar tone on the solo. know what else i like? the restrained vocals. i hate it when vocalists oversing, bring melodrama into their tone, whatever. this guy keeps it cool, sings with the song instead of wailing overtop of it. great. 4/5

i'll definitely get back to this...have to get breakfast ready then heading out for a bike ride then a visit with my mom. but these first two tracks are solid stuff.

reply

Oh yeah!!! That’s what I’m talking about!! I’m working today then off for a week. Have a good one and say hi to mama for me! :)))

reply

ok, gave the last two tracks a listen.

come a little closer - another winner. 4/5 agreed, great video as well. parts of it reminded me just a little bit of dan deacon's clip for when i was done dying? ever seen this? it's got some pretty trippy stuff in it.

shake me down is the one track that i'm a bit luke-warm on, maybe? not that i thought it was bad, or anywhere close to bad. but it just felt a little alt-rock generic to me. the arrangement, chorus just didn't feel that distinctive? but that's just one listen.

but i absolutely dug the sound of the band overall, and i would absolutely listen to more of this. i don't really listen to a lot of new music these days, but i'm likely going to have a long day at work tomorrow, so maybe i'll try to listen to an album or two from them while i'm on the clock.

thanks!

reply

Haven’t heard of Deacon. I’ll definitely look it up because I love trippy stuff.

The delgados everything goes around the water: I was enjoying the song alright when it took a certain turn vocally and I was positively surprised. I would actually love to be able to listen to this song with its original quality and with better speakers because near the middle I was almost fully immersed and until the end. We got a French-Canadian band over here that consist of a male singer but the girl that plays the violin will sing on a track or two on each album and it creates this kind of gem. Is the girl always singing with the guy? I’ll find out I guess… I love violin. My rating: 8.5/10

Reasons for silence: it’s the girl that sang first and alone! she’s so good. I think I prefer her to the guy. She’s actually like a better version of the Quebec violinist I mentioned. I think I’m in love. 9/10

My second band is Stabilo and you most probably heard their famous songs on the radio like:

“Everybody” (Doesn't anybody know how to walk anymore?
Doesn't anybody know what a radio is for ?
Doesn't anybody wear their hair down low ?
Doesn't anybody know? doesn't anybody know?)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pZAsYp-gI0Q

Or “Flawed design” (When I was a young boy
I was honest and I had more self control
If I was tempted I would
Run… and I will turn off and I will shut down…)

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-SHNE8vaLEY

But strangely my favourite is one of their more obscure song and it’s not even the original version but a different rare version. I’ve listen to hit countless times and know the lyrics by heart and still have no clue about what it means! Paperboy:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r2Tm0L2dTsM

Another one of their more overlooked songs that might look very simple on the surface but I think it’s very intricate and deep if you pay attention: if it was up to me
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8OHJvX6ag7U

reply

i'll give those a listen tonight/tomorrow morning.

i'm so happy you dug those delgado tracks. they never quite got their due imo.

on their early albums, the guy takes most of their vocals. if i remember correctly, on peloton, their 2nd record, he sings 8 tracks, she takes 3.

but on their last three records, they basically take turns and split vocals evenly.

here are a few more tracks with emma on lead. she has at least one solo album, which i've never heard & that i really should give a spin one of these days.

make your move:

woke from dreaming:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbN2KOcaEWY&ab_channel=ClaphamJunction (this 'might' be my favourite delgados track - depends on what day you ask, i guess)

reply

i have 100% never heard this band before, but i never ever listen to the radio, and i'm more or less completely clued out of most music now. never thought it would happen, but at some point it stopped being important to me to keep current.

have to be honest: the first two tracks didn't really grab me. both just felt a little too produced, maybe? i'm kinda finicky when it comes to that sort of sound - i really generally like ugliness & crude production qualities in music.

but i liked the last two songs a lot more. & in fact thought that if it was up to me was flat out great. liked the rugged guitar tone, loved the way the song kinda wound around without quite resolving maybe? almost reminded me a bit of the old 97s, if you know that band at all.

i'm going to pass on rating the first two tracks - maybe i'll try giving them a listen with fresh ears before i crash tonight, but i give paperby a 3.5/5 & if it was up to me a 4.

thanks!

reply

That was fun man, thank you too!

reply

Omg… Kraftwerk’s Computer World 2 was waaay ahead of it’s time. I think it came out in 1982 and that track was still being mixed into music in the early 2000s.

reply

definitely a band way ahead of their time & of enormous influence!
