first, the radicalization of the republican party, which proceeded during the late 70s, blossoming w/ reagan
second, the bork nomination (an overt abortion opponent) & confirmation
third, cable news segmenting the political demographic, and the proliferation of political jousting as entertainment
fourth, the internet, further siloing opinion, opening further opportunities for the weaponization of disinformation
fifth, social media - further branding of content to personal market data
sixth, the ultimate radicalization of the republican party w/ trump, an openly divisive president speaking entirely to his voting public, thumbing his nose at the rest of the country, pushing for a coup upon being deposed by the voters.
i know this reflects a leftish viewpoint, but that is my honest opinion and i think its fair. the democratic party has been playing either me-too republicanism under clinton, or half-hearted neoliberalism under obama, generally getting beat like a drum. the wholesale aversion to government, and slavish servitude to the financial rewards for the rich promoted by reaganism has sunk into the american marrow.
the system seems almost now exquisitely balanced on the head of a pin, our nation now incapable of finding its way out of a pandemic, when the course of recovery lays before us so clearly. we are PARALYZED.
