Geography to follow your hint. Half of them can't pinpoint Alaska on a map. And central America is a region like New England. It is part of the North American continent.
Our own history. A few years ago I saw an interview with a producer of one of the "reality shows" that plague TV these days. He said that when assessing the education of potential contestants, one thing they would ask candidates to do was name three US Presidents from the 19th century -- and that it was disgusting how many couldn't do it.
Also, one I'm hearing a lot lately. "Tokyo" has two syllables -- "Toe-kyo," not "Toe-kee-oh."
And, New Orleans denizens give their city two syllables -- Nwar-lins.
Ever watch reruns of the old Dragnet television series? I think almost every American pronounces "California" with four syllables -- Cal-ih-forn-ya. Except Jack Webb, who enunciated all five -- Cal-ih-for-nee-uh. Added to all his other quirks, it's pretty funny.
Upon reflection, it's asking too much to expect people to honor pronunciations in languages other than their own. The French city is pronounced Pair-ee, but we pronounce it Pair-iss ... but then again, they call the United States "États Unis." So if Americans give Tokyo an extra syllable, fine. The really unforgivable one was in the movie Rollerball (the original, not the wretched remake), when a Japanese crowd cheered on their sports team, shouting "TOE-KEE-OH! TOE-KEE-OH!"
> California was 5 syllables with Governor Annie as well.
I just looked at a list of the governors of California and saw nobody named Ann, so I'm guessing you meant "Governor Arnie" here ... Maybe he wants to play Joe Friday when he returns to acting?
Unfortunately, the American education system had been degraded significantly since it was taken over by modern liberals. When teachers spend time indoctrinating their students with crap like Critical Race Theory and other liberal viewpoints, they don't have as much time to teach Geography, History, and Math.
That's why you get these 'on the street' interviews where kids can't even answer question like how many states are in the union, or which country we declared our independence from.
The benefits of Universal Healthcare. Some Americans are so hung up on their hatred of taxes and resentment of the poor that they don't realize that although they are against universal healthcare because it'd mean "paying for other people to get medical treatment"... they don't realize they're already paying for poor people to get medical treatment!
Not just through government subsidized programs and the group pools at their medical insurances, if they have any, but if the poor can't get medical insurance then it's not like they stay healthy, or stay home and die rather than seek treatment when they get so sick. They'll go to an ER or a hospital, probably much sicker than they needed to be because of the delay, and they'll get treated and have an extra-long stay because they were so sick and no nursing home will accept them if they need extended care, and run up a massive hospital bill which is never paid. So the hospital raises rates for the paying customers to cover the loss, and the money comes out of the pockets of people who are against universal healthcare because they think it'll cost them a couple of dollars...
Not sure if it is their resentment of the poor so much as their self hatred and love for those that enslave them. They can't see things on macro levels. They are taught to blame themselves for the society they are forced to endure.
