Charade is not a foreign language film. It had a little French, but mostly English. But yes, one of my faves otherwise!

There is a French film that came out in 2017 or 18 named Fatima. It was about an Algerian immigrant family and their daily struggles. I no longer have a DVD player, therefore I have not watched many films. I watch mostly English language films online. Black Orpheus from the 50's was decent too.

Many of the most famous ones, like Bicycle Thieves and The 400 Blows, I haven't seen. But here goes:

La Grande Illusion (1937)
Diabolique (1955)
Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972)
Amarcord (1973)
Day for Night (1973)
Das Boot (1981)

Some very good Asian horror and crime movies:

Oldboy
Chaser
The Untold Story
I Saw The Devil
Parasite
The Host
Train To Busan (i saw an English dub)

I'll try to add some Euro ones later

reply

i've had the chaser on my 'must see' list for ages. it never seems to pop up on any of the streaming services i use. i'll have to just break down and rent it one of these days.

reply

Youtube has Chaser in my region but the runtime seems incorrect...

You can also find it on AMC+Prime (but that's $8.99 a month) or IFC Films Unlimited (which is a free 7 day trial)

Happy hunting, these streaming services are a bit hit or miss!

reply

MUBI, filmfriend, Joyn+ and Sky Go have it too.

reply

Well done👍

reply

i'm guessing you're in europe? i see that it's available for rent on mubi in several european countries, but it doesn't look like it's there in north america.

i can bounce around with my vpn, but i've never actually tried to rent a film from mubi in switzerland or denmark. not sure how well that would work.

Nice list..

Have you seen:
"Ochu" - which to me, is a better, domestic version of "The Lives of Others"
"The Castle of Purity" - kinda similar to "Dogtooth"
"Taste of Cherry" - my favorite Kiarostami (with Close-Up at #2)

reply

ochu i don't know at all. do you have a director, release date on that? i don't seem to be able to pull anything up searching for that title on letterboxd.

castle of purity i still have yet to see - i know you've mentioned it a few times whenever dogtooth comes up. i'm definitely interested in seeing it, but haven't tracked it down yet.

taste of cherry i have seen, but only once. i'll give it a re-watch one of these days. my memory is that i liked it, but it didn't have the kind of impact close-up did on me.

reply

My apologies - I spelled it incorrectly
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066498/

When you saw "Close-Up", did you know the story behind it beforehand?

reply

no problem - i have definitely never seen or heard of that movie, but it absolutely looks interesting. it's on criterion, & i am definitely gonna check it out. maybe today, more likely tomorrow. thanks!

i don't think i knew anything about close-up the first time i watched it - didn't know the story it was based on, who the actors were, any of that. i think knowing all that stuff might have added to future viewings, but i'm glad i got my first watch in completely blind.

reply

Yeah, I also like going into a movie blindly. I don't need to know more than a sentence from IMDB, but sometimes even those are a little spoiler-ish.

If you see it today or tomorrow (or whenever), please reply back here with your thoughts. Cheers and enjoy!

reply

i liked it a lot. definitely can see the connective tissue between this and lives of others. i don't think i dug this quite as much as lives..., but that's one of my favourite films of the last 20 years, so that's no slight on it.

really liked the bizarre party scenes in particular, but the whole thing is a very cool cold war thriller. very good recommendation on your part. thanks again.

reply

Glad you liked it!

When I first saw it, the beginning was a little fuzzy, but as time went on, it got really good.
