Tom Hanks
He looks like a neighborhood dad sort of guy, I'd give him oil for his snowblower and invite him in for a beer

I've got nothing against Tom Cruise but he seems like a skittish guy in real life and I don't think he's as good of an actor as Hanks

Tom Cruise seems like a nut. Especially with that whole scientology thing and his bizarre marriage to Katie Holmes. Remember when he jumped on Oprah's couch?

I don't think he'll ever live that one down!

Cruise did something once that I applauded, calling out Dr. Phil for his horse shit. On his show, Dr. Phil made some remarks about Cruise's behavior, using all sorts of clinical terminology. Things like, "Cruise does X, which is often indicative of [some disorder], and also does Y, which is typical of those suffering from [some other disorder]."

Cruise immediately made a sarcastic, public response, in effect, "My God, isn't he a brilliant man! Most clinicians would need to interview a patient extensively before making such determinations! But not Dr. Phil. He can diagnose people he's never met!"

Dr. Phil backpedaled immediately. "Oh no! I just said his behaviors are symptomatic of those disorders. I never said he himself has those problems!" And with good reason; diagnosing someone he's never met is an ethics violation and could have cost him his license to practice.

Cruise had it right, though. When a man goes on TV, calling himself "Doctor," talks extensively about psychological issues, and makes statements like those, he is pronouncing a diagnosis, no matter what weasel language he uses to protect himself.

Incidentally, Dr. Phil later voluntarily gave up his license. Probably so he could pull crap like that and get away with it.

reply

But can you still call yourself a doctor if you gave up your license?

reply

Sure. "Doctor" is an academic title, not a clinical one. Aspiring physicians, newly graduated from medical school but only starting their residencies, are called Doctor because of their M.D. degrees. Bill Cosby and Jill Biden both have Ed.D. degrees and so are entitled to use it, and the media reminds us of it every chance they get in her case. I don't think Cosby uses it much these days.

You don't need a terminal degree, though. Just go to Italy. There the custom is that anyone with a bachelor's degree can call themselves Doctor.

Yeah, he seems a bit nutty

Hanks just seems to be more of a normal guy you could probably chat with

Tom Hanks, have you seen Sully?
