If the middle one was of him crying I'd say Gene Tierney. So I guess I am stumped.

reply

No, you got it. Jeans + T.R. (Teddy Roosevelt) + knee.

reply

Ah Ha!

reply

I figured "jean" and "knee" pretty well gave it away.

On reflection, I have to apologize. I should have said "yes, Gene Tierney and it does work, see if you can figure out how," then left it as a fun puzzle for a while longer.

I'm taking a guess.

Is the second one "rain" and the third "han"? Assuming the first picture is "Kath", + Rain + Han = Kathryn Hahn.

reply

No, that's not it. At least not what I had in mind. Can you get Kath out of the first one?

A hint. Look through some of the others that have been posted and solved recently. There's a clue there.

reply

No, not Kath. But I felt like I was right about the last two. Rain Han sounded like "ryn Hahn."

reply

I'm stumped. The rain might be dew or drop.

reply

I think I got it

James (Bible) + Dew + Han = James Doohan

reply

That's it! I'm very surprised you were stumped for any time, since by coincidence you used a similar picture for dew for Colleen Dewhurst after I posted this; I figured if anyone got this immediately it would be you.

(Phone) call + lean(ing tower of pisa) + dew + hearse = Colleen Dewhurst

The last photo is weird. Nobody should smile posing with a hearse.

reply

Yah. Mine are pretty easy I guess. I'll try and come up with something more challenging.

reply

Proud Cadillac owner. hehe

reply

FFS I'm still trying to figure out your others and you hit me with this impossibility.

reply

Have you tried dragging the pictures into Google Images? You can get good clues that way.

I'll give a hint. It's an actress from the silent film era.

reply

I've thought about dragging into Google images, but there's no fun in that.

reply

Oh, come on. ;)

Intolerance is a bad thing. One should always be open to new ways of doing things.

Birth must be a traumatic event, leading to certain deficits. I think that by nature I am bad at verbal puzzles. Categories like "13 letter words" on Jeopardy always seem to stump me. I must have a congenital defect. I understand the frustration of not being able to solve a problem easily.

Of one thing I have no doubt; the evidence you need is right before your eyes.

A strategy to try is looking at the problem differently; for example, if a text seems puzzling, try reading vertically instead of horizontally.

Nation building is a bad idea. It generally doesn't work. I recorded a documentary which I will watch later. That may seem off topic for this thread, but it seems like a good idea to throw that in.

reply

I don't know if you saw my first reply to you here or not, so I'm bumping the thread here. Even though the puzzle is already solved, you might get a kick out of it. ;) I was trying to spark some deja vu, since you and I had been discussing her just a few days earlier.

reply

My notifications have been out of whack the last week of so. I'll click on a response and it won't scroll to the proper response. Sometimes it's not even on the same page.

reply

That's OK. This thread seems to be comatose anyway. Too bad, it's a fun game. Maybe wait a couple of weeks then try to revive it.

reply

The first one is a mere (weapon), and the Moriori pronunciation is close to "Mary"

The last is a Cooper.

That's all I have.

reply

The second one should be glaringly obvious. LOL

Great job on the first one; I was worried that would be too obscure.

reply

[deleted]

Read "mere" as spoken in English. I hadn't considered that the foreign pronunciation might be confusing.

Also, read my reply to samoanjoes above, which begins "Oh, come on." He and I were discussing this actress in a different thread four days ago. It's dripping with clues, I was hoping to spark some deja vu.

reply

I cheated a little and looked up "Pare Watene"

reply

If Googling, searching by image, et cetera are cheating, that's bad -- I've been doing a lot of it!

reply

The thing is, using tiny url doesn't always hide the description, because when you click on it you may see the original URL in the address bar, where I got the idea to look her up (because I was stumped). The thing in her hand might as well have been a paddle before I read about the painting.

reply

However you figured it out, I'm glad you did. I was assuming people were searching on the Internet for clues; if I thought people were prohibited from doing that, I wouldn't have used that clue. The OP doesn't say we can't do that. I had never heard of a mere until I typed the word into Google images to get ideas for something to use as a clue.

The silly thing is, after I posted that puzzle it occurred to me -- I should have used the Mir space station instead.

miriam cooper

reply

That's got to be it

reply

Nicely done!

reply

Another tough one. Looking at the URLs might help. And, it's a pretty obscure actor, IMDB lists him with only 15 or so acting credits.

A hint. The first photo is of the inside of a marine supply store.

reply

Confession time: I had to do some searching to figure this one out. I didn't know a "chandler" was a retail dealer in provisions and supplies or equipment of a specified kind,* in this case the marine supply supply store. I didn't even see the guy behind the counter until I enlarged the image.

Chandler + canter (pace of a horse) + bury = Chandler Canterbury

(*this definition is from https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary) I learned something new.

reply

Well done!

I've heard it used as "a person who trades in supplies for ships." -- https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/chandler
