Abolish Daylight Savings Time
It accomplishes nothing but the disruption of human life cycles. Yet every Spring we go through this ritual because the following myths and misconceptions continue to circulate:
1. DST saves energy. This may have been true back during WWI when this practice was first implemented. In today's 24-hour society the effects are zero or minimal. Some studies have even shown that more energy is wasted when the switch is made to DST.
2. DST was instituted to help the farmers. Farmers have opposed this practice for decades. They get up at dawn regardless of how the time is set. Animals must be fed and cows milked at the same time of the day. Livestock do not read clocks.
3. The days are longer when we switch to DST. Wrong. Yes, there is more sunlight in the Spring and Summer because the Earth is tilted on its axis with the Northern Hemisphere facing the Sun. The amount of total daily sunlight depends upon the time of year. Resetting the clocks has absolutely nothing to do with it. With DST you are merely getting up one hour earlier, which creates the illusion of a "longer" day.
4. The Sun sets an hour later when we're on DST. No. The Sun hasn't moved, the clocks have. The "8:30 pm" (fake time) sunset still occurs at 7 hours and 30 minutes after the high noon point, or 7:30 pm.
Congress is responsible for this nonsense. They need to be told to stop this antiquated practice. Standard Time is the true time, with noon recorded when the Sun appears highest in the sky. DST is bogus time. Standard Time should be the... well, standard year-round. Employers could be encouraged to offer earlier starting/quitting times during the Spring and Summer for those who wish to continue pursuing that mythical "longer" day. Anyone who absolutely must have that extra daylight is also free to get up one hour earlier during those months.
